Too much amniotic fluid????

I am 38 weeks (39 on Monday) and Dr. says I have too much amniotic fluid.  Anyone else have experience with this?  I had a NST and that came out good.  Now I have a "Bio Physical Ultrasound" this Tuesday.  :-/  Feeling stressed about it.  Not sure if I am worrying for nothing.

Re: Too much amniotic fluid????

  • I had too much fluid.  It's one of those things that could mean a whole array of things or it could mean nothing.  I don't normally suggest googling it, but it really did give me a whole lot of information.  My doctor said it could mean I had GD (I did not), baby could have an issue (like some kind of syndrome; I think he mentioned Down's) which is why you'll get an ultrasound, or baby could have heart issues, which is why we got NSTs.  I don't remember what else was said.  There could be issues like preterm labor (obviously you're past that point) or a placental abruption.  Then my doctor said the biggest reason for too much fluid is often no reason at all.  I did not have any issues, and my DD is fine.  Too much fluid could create issues which is why you're being monitored more closely, but it could also mean nothing.  Hang in there!  Everything worked out fine for me.

  • I'm in the same boat.   My ultrasound is on MOnday.  I have a doctors appt right after and have a list of questions, starting with asking what exactly my amniotic fluid number is.  The good news seems to be that when a mild case shows up at the very end of pregnancy, it's not usuallly too much of a problem.  Biggest issue in that case seems to be l&d complications.   Fx for good news at the ultrasounds for both of us!

  • Thank you both for your advice.  I did google it, and it was upsetting, especially that my Dr. ordered the tests but did not explain why until I asked her, but she seemed not concerned at all.  She seems to be like that all the time though, and I have a hard time reading her.

So glad your daughter was healthy. :)

Good luck to us both during our ultrasounds.  Let me know how it goes if you remember.

  • I am so sorry about your little boy Adam!  He was so beautiful!  If you don't mind me asking, was it sudden or an illness he had?

My love goes with you and your family.

His autopsy was unclear, but what we know to have happened leading to his death was him spitting up and then choking.  So it was very sudden and unexpected.  Thank you for your sweet words.  :)

Thank you so much for your advice and Happy Mother's Day to you!

  • I do not know what my levels are but I think anything higher than 25 is when they get concerned.  I will ask on Tuesday!  Good luck to you!!

    Hi Kim,

Got some good news at mine.  My AFI dropped all on its own from 24.7 last time to 18.6 this time.  So they didn't even do the baby checking portion of the ultrasound, and the whole thing took about 5 minutes.  Saw the doc after and she says everything looks great.  Woohoo!  Hoping your levels have fallen as well and you get a similar result at yours tomorrow!

Update on Kimmy: Amniotic Fluid is still high (but in the normal range) 22cm. Blood pressure is high for the first time this pregnancy. They sent me for labs. Only 1 cm dilated (same as last Tuesday). Going in on Thursday for another non stress test, review labs, check blood pressure and cervix. If blood pressure is still high, she wants to induce, but the problem with inducing is that I am only 1cm, and it is usually a long process and I can't have an epidural, so I may have a c-section. If it is not one thing, it is another. :-)  Good luck to both of us!  :-)
