does nipple pain go away?? :o/

hey moms!

so my baby is 13 days old now. i had a c-section so for the first week i was on a lot of medication, but now that i've weaned off and feeling ok...my nipples are so sore! :( every time he latches it feels like a "titty twister" for like 30-60 seconds. then after the feeding i can feel them pulsing. does this eventually go away?? please tell me yes. i'm pretty sure he's latching correctly because i saw a lactation consultant. i'm using warm compresses and olive oil on them in between feedings. i'm about to start taking tylenol and drinking wine to numb the pain though! :/

Yes, it does.  I thought the same thing.

I'd get some nipple cream- I bought motherlove nipple cream on amazon, and it's much better than lansinoh.  I used it after each feeding, and it really did make a difference within a day.  Within a week, I had forgotten where I'd left my jar.

You can also get some soothies from a local drug store or amazon.  Those also help quite a bit.

  • Like PP said, try some nipple cream.  It WILL eventually go away.  I used the nipple cream for the first couple of weeks, but not since.  They still get a little tender every now and then.

    Good luck!

  • Yup, it goes away. As long as they're latching correctly. Nurse from different angles/positions so there's not always friction on the exact same place on your nipples. And try the laid back position (google it). Essentially you lay back on a slight incline and set LO tummy to tummy with you, with their feet towards your feet (it's hard to explain, hence why I suggest googling it haha). They nurse in that position with their head above your breast, so gravity is pulling their head downwards towards it.... meaning they latch really deep and well. This position was suggested to me in the hospital by a nurse and it SAVED my nipples! I had bad blisters. That was the only position I breastfed in for a few days while my nipples healed, and by the time I was brave enough to try something different, DD had learned to latch that well in any position. Now I bake cookies with her hanging on for dear life lol.

Also, after each feeding, express a little breastmilk and rub it on your nipple. It's antibacterial and great for healing. And Lanolin obviously, but that's more for healing damage that's already been done, like blisters, cracks, etc

Good luck! It'll get better, and you'll start loving it :)

  • It does go away. For me it disappeared around the 2-3 wk mark for all my kiddos.  Keep doing what you're doing and hang in there!

  • Yes! It goes away. I had very sore nipples in the beginning with DD, but it got better after a few weeks. With DS I didn't have sore nipples much at all.

  • Yes it does.  I used nipple cream for about a month and now I don't use it any more. It hurts a lot to get through it, but once you do you will forget that they were even hurting.
