I posted about a month or so ago about how my DH was pretty freaked out about natural birth. After going to our childbirth class (which was amazingly pro-natural, I love our hospital) and reading Natural Hospital Birth he has really come around, and today we finally got around to watching BOBB.
It was amazing!! I am so inspired to give birth now. With every birth they showed I just could not control the tears. DH said he loved how they were all so calm and the husbands were so supportive and it really helped him to understand his role in this whole crazy event. The cascades of interventions finally hit home with him as well. He kept pausing it and saying "Now I see why you dont want pitocin" or "Thats so scary that one intervention makes everything go downhill".
So we are now full speed ahead with our birth plan and I am so thrilled. I just wanted to thank you ladies for referring me to that great book and this wonderful film when I asked you in a panic a few months ago how to get my DH on board. Your advice was invaluable!
Re: Finally watched BOBB
I watched it with MH before getting pregnant while I was getting my prenatal yoga certification. MH said the same things that yours did - that these women were so much calmer and more connected and the scariness of spiraling interventions.
Congratulations and have a wonderful birth!
I agree. I think it helped my DH and I feel a lot more confident in natural birth in a at home atmosphere. My husband kept saying, "Wow that lady isn't even screaming, she doesn't even look like shes in that much pain." Like he was suprised that our bodies could actually deliver a child without being in horrible pain or taking meds cuz all of the stories he's heard before are about how terrible childbirth is.
I felt so inspired by BOBB and I knew without a doubt that med free birth was the way to go. It was like a mommy instict that just took over in my heart. This is coming from someone who, at the beginning of my pregnancy, was planning on having a routine hospital birth and taking the epidural asap. Now, I can't even imagine that as an option.
The Business of Being Born. Its a documentary film about natural childbirth, very skewed towards home birth, and pretty anti-hospital. We are aiming for a natural birth in a hospital, and I did have to keep pausing and reminding DH that our hospital is actually very supportive and conducive to a natural birth, because I didnt want him to get too scared in the other direction!
If you are interested in a natural birth, I think this is a great movie to watch! Im happy we waited to watch it, as well, because it really got me inspired and excited to give birth!
Definitely check out the second BOBB called More the Business of Being Born. My husband and I have watched both courtesy of our neighborhood library and I think the 2nd installment is better because it's more in depth and really studies women and their birth stories. What is also on the MBOBB is the interview with the midwives on The Farm, including Ina May Gaskin. They also tour a birth center and the discussion on doula services was invaluable. It really helped us understand why we made the natural birth choice.
I didn't know there was a 2nd documentary. Thanks for sharing, I just put it on reserve at my local library.
thanks ladies. I will make sure to add that to our movie queue. Thanks again!
