12in or 16in wheels on bike for 3 y/o?

DD is pretty tall and she's outgrown her tricycle. we want to get her a new bike with training wheels, but also want it to last more than one summer.

what do you think?

    Im getting DS who is 4 a 14 inch. We went and tested them out at Toys R Us and that was the size that he was most comfortable with.

    We got DS, who is probably 39 or 40 in tall, a 16 inch bike for his fourth birthday.

    We got DD a 16 in bike when she was 3.5.  She was/is tall for her age.  Sometime this summer we plan on also getting DS a 16 in bike.

    We tried DS, who is 40" tall, on both of those bikes (in their "boy" patterns) last time we were at Walmart. The 12" one was fine but it already looked too small and I doubt he'd be able to ride it next year. He could reach the pedals on the 16" one but didn't quite have enough leg length to push them back up from the bottom position. We didn't end up buying anything yet because I've been trying to find something decent on craigslist. If we buy used, we'll go for a 12" for this year, but if we buy new will probably get the 16" one.

    Deffinetly try them out. The frame size makes a huge difference too. DS is too small for bikes with 16 inch wheels because he can't touch the ground although he can peadle them a bit. Of the 12 inch bikes we tryed many seemed too small for him but we did end up finding a brand whose frames were a bit bigger and it is perfect fit for him. 3 is a hard age for a bike it seems. the 12s are almost too small but the 16s are too big. We bought a used 12 just in case it is 1 summer deal. He wouldn't have been comfortable on a 16 inch and he wouldn't have want to ride it. Bike stores here say that little kids' bike sizes only last about 2 years normally. 2-4 = 12 4-6 = 16. Good luck!

    We just got DS a 14 inch.  I am so glad we never got a 12 inch, he would have outgrown that already.  Both girls who live across the street use 16 inch bikes - they are 4.5 and 7 (the bike is pretty small for the 7 year old, but she loves it!)
