Shots

What shots do they do while still in the hospital?

The whole vaccine thing drives me crazy....I seriously think all these shots (and new shots, and old shots coming back) are sooooo overdone and I would love to refuse all of them for my PURE baby, but I know that that isn't realistic.

What shots are you refusing and why?

What shots are you allowing and why?

At my hospital it is just Hep B that is given at the hospital. I plan to vaccinate my child, but am considering spacing them out some and not doing the combination vaccines (prefer separate shots in case of reaction). A lot of childhood illnesses are on the rise again (measles, whopping cough, chicken pox) because people are choosing not to vaccinate. These disease are nothing to mess around with. Yes, your child may get them and be fine, but what if they end up with complications or die? Can you handle knowing you would be responsible for that? As someone who works in a pediatric er and does procedures on very sick children, I have seen this first hand. I realize this is a very heated topic and people have to decide what is best for them and their children, but this is my opinion. The whole vaccines cause autism thing has been disproven (the author of the only study that showed this admitted that the results were not accurate and no other study has been able to duplicate the results, which is very important in scientific research). So unless new research appears and shows me that there are major risks, I plan to get the shots to protect my child. Me and all 4 of my sisters were fully vaccinated and have no problems.

The only shot my hospital does is the hep b. However, my pedi does not do it at the hospital, he waits until the first office visit. He told me to decline if I do not have it myself, and I don't. Baby will get it within 72 hours tho.

  • The only vaccine an infant can get is the Hep B vaccine.  The others won't be given until around 2 months of age.  You do not have to have this done in hospital if you have it at all.  You can always politely decline the vaccine.  They can't give it until you sign the consent, so you don't have to worry about it being given without permission.
  • We're having LO at a BC so we don't have to worry about the hep vaccine - personally I think that newborns are a bit too young for something like that (that's something they can always get a little later). We also have the option of oral Vitamin K administration over the shot, which we're opting for.

Other than that, we were lucky enough to find a pediatrician who's on board with a flexible vaccine schedule, so we'll see what she suggests!

  • We declined Hep B until DD's 2w appointment and plan to do the same for all of our children.  We do this to get BFing well established.  Other than that we follow the CDC schedule and she gets all of her shots on time.
  • My children do not get the Hep B vaccine. I wrote an extensive post about this a while back explaining my process for deciding which vaccinations I would accept and which I would reject. I don't think opinions on a message board is enough information to make an educated decision about it. If you are interested in partially vaccinating, I would recommend that you research every disease that there is a recommended vaccine for. What is the disease? What are the complications? How would your child get it? What is/how difficult or uncomfortable is the treatment for the disease? What is the likelihood of complications? Are there factors that will put your child at higher risk for complications? If the child fails to receive boosters on time or contracts the disease anyway, what happens? Are certain periods of life more risky than others for this disease? Also research the vaccine. What is the vaccine? Is it a live vaccine? What are the complications/risks of the vaccine? Have previous versions of the vaccine been recalled? How long has the vaccine been in use? (You're trying to figure out the likelihood of unknown risks.) Once you have all of that information you can make an informed decision for your child. My recommendation is always that if you don't want to do that research (from reliable, legitimate sources), vaccinate your child as recommended.

You should take a tour arounda children's hospital to see how many "pure" children end up there very sick and/or dying. I have absolutely no problem with spacing out shots but I think it should be child endangerment to not vaccinate at all.

I'm not sure how accurate it is to say that all children who don't get shots end up sick and/or dying because of it......? Also, thinking it should be considered "child endangerment" is your own opinion which you are entitled to...I just do not agree with that.

  • There is a chance that a child could experience side effects (mild to life threatening or deadly) to every single vaccine that is out there.  This possibility is written right there on the vaccine package inserts.

At the same time, there is a chance that a child who is not vaccinated could catch a possibly-vaccine preventable disease.  If they do, the illness could be mild to life threatening or deadly.

Either way, it's a gamble.  It should (AND IS) up to each parent to decide which way they are more comfortable gambling.

My recommendation is to read the package inserts re: each vaccine & each brand of vaccine so you know potential side effects, ingredients, etc.  Also do extensive research on each disease that the vaccines prevent.  Then decide which way you are comfortable gambling, because honestly, that's what it is.  There is no sure bet "safe" way either way - educating yourself and making an informed choice is the best way to go.

ETA:  No one, not a single person, can force you to vaccinate your child.  If you are told this, you are being bullied by healthcare workers.  You have a right to informed consent and you have a right to turn down any and all vaccinations at any point, for any reason.

I agree with you. I have been doing some research on it even before I was pregnant. It is a tough decision that envolves alot of prayer & research, which DH plans on doing. I was just curious to know what others have decided. Thanks for your input wannabigfam!

I never said all unvaccinated children end up sick. I have just seen way too many children die from something that could so easily be prevented by a vaccine. They are here for a reason and that reason isn't to harm your child. Yes, sometimes your child may have a negative reaction to a vaccine but that is so rare, your child stands a much better chance getting sick without having a vaccine.

I still do think it's child endangerment not to vaccine but I do realize How I said that was harsh.  All other posters were very correct in doing research. Hopefully over time vaccines won't get such a bad rap and we can see the positive they have.

  • We'll do Hep B in the early teens...also declined rotovirus, and delayed Hep A until 2yo since she's been home with me.

But otherwise DD has been vaccinated within the recommended CDC windows for all the rest. We just spaced them out, and did nurse-only visits as needed.

Can't put my finger on exactly why...but saying that an unvaccinated baby is "PURE"...kinda gets my hackles up. Vaccines do protection babies, and populations, and do have some icky things in them sometimes... eh...oh, well.
