Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Where do you put LO when you're outside?

May seem like a stupid question, but we're really debating what to do with LO when we're outside.  Our DD loves being outside...now we either hold her or put her in her stroller.

We'd like something that she can sit in and play....not necessary move around, but could play with toys.  We were thinking maybe a wagon?  Looks like some of them have seat belts.

Plus, we do a nanny share with our neighbors and the other kids are 2.5yrs old and 5yrs old.  They always want to be outside but our DD get's antsy in the stroller.

So really, something that is mobile but provides more entertainment than a stroller.

Any suggestions?

  • We have a couple of options for LO before she was walking. We have an outdoor swing by little tikes, a kiddie pool converted to a sandbox, and baby Gaye hexagon things with foam matting under it. I would put her in there with her cup and some toys while the day care kids played. You could also use a pack and play the same way.

  • DS does like the wagon for walks. I think he's happier in there than the stroller (he can see me and look around more).

For in the backyard, I just let him roam. Yes, he gets dirty. Yes, he tries to eat pinecones. I let him crawl when he was crawling and now he's walking so it's somewhat less dirty. He loves to explore.

  • I second the pack n play in a shady spot. My DD hates grass. She cries every time I sit her in it, even if I lay down a blanket first. Now, I get the pack n play and sit her in that and then let my 2.5 year old run around and play. We live in a condo, so not alot of yard, but my parents live on a 5 acre wooded lot and have a swing set and other toys. Its nice to do this when we are visiting so DD#1 can roam free and I dont have to worry about DD#2 choking on rocks, dirt, pine cones, etc.

Um, why can't she sit in the grass?

  • We always just laid a blanket out before DS could walk and he was happy on that. Your DD could be walking sooner than you think so it might be a waste to buy extra stuff. Although I'm sure you'd get a lot of use out a wagon because that's still fun even after they can walk!

This.  DS has been "playing" in the grass since around 4 months thanks to a mild winter.  Now he loves cruising around the outdoor toys.

I'm with the ladies who suggested a blanket.  We just toss a picnic blanket out with a few toys and DS is happy to play.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions!

We do put our DD in the grass....although she's not so sure about it right now!  And we do the blanket as well.

We were thinking of something that would "contain" her.   Sometimes DH and I want to be outside doing random yard work like pulling weeds.  DD has no issue just hanging our in her stroller while we do that, but we wanted something a little more "fun" for her.

And, since our nanny is managing 2.5 yr old twins and a 5yr old outside, the containment would be a much easier option.    Not that she doesn't give our DD the opportunity to crawl around, but it would be nice to have something safer so the other kids can run around and play.

  • I use a blanket - I would just plunk 'em down in the grass, but both of my kids despise(d) the feel of the grass at first.

  • Wagon, swing, sandbox for the most part.

I've also hauled her exersaucer out there on occasion too.
For the most part I let her crawl the lawn. We live way out in the country and in the sticks, so she can roam the lawn without me worrying about much. We also don't fertilize/do weed sprays, etc. so I'm not worried about what's in the lawn.

She loves the sandbox most! Hours of fun and she can crawl around. She tends to eat it but meh...whatever..she'll live.

I just use a blanket.  If she crawls off, oh well.  She's eaten her fair share of dirt at this point.  I think it just comes with the territory.

  • I take her exersaucer outside, or let her play on a blanket with toys.
  • I let him crawl around in the grass.  I'll admit I wasn't too big on it with DD, but things are way different second time around.  He doesn't stick anything in his mouth, and I keep my eye on him.  Otherwise, we have a wagon, cozy coup - yup, he can kid of do it, trike with straps and push handle, and a swing.  I also take a walking toy outside for him to walk around.
