Its going to be such a LONG week! ? for 2nd timers

I am on bedrest for mild pre-E, and we are getting induced next Thursday night.  I can't believe I have to stay at home while my husband works 50 hours over the next 6 days. I want to DO something!  Of course, I also got everything ready for the baby early as I thought I would be working right up until D-day.  Any suggestions?

Also, I have to go in Thursday night to get Cervadil and then they will start inducing the next morning.  Any second timers have experience with this?  What exactly is Cervadil?  I'm sure I'll start doing research on it, but just wondering what others experiences were.

6 days and counting! :)

  • I'm not a second timer but have done some research since I'm getting induced on tuesday. Basically cervadil is a prosteglandin that helps ripen your cervix and get you more ready for labor so that the actual induction (i.e. pitocin) will have a better chance of being successful! I think this is the one that occasionally it'll put a woman right into labor, but I could be wrong on that one. I don't remember.

  • I would just arm yourself with things to do:  watch movies, read a book/magazines, scrapbook, have friends visit (if they can).  Sorry I can't think of much more to do on bedrest :(  I don't have advice about Cervadil either.  My girlfriend had it with one of her babies.  I think it softens and ripens your cervix to get it ready for Pitocin or it was help you go into labor itself.  I know for my friend, they inserted it and then sent her home or wherever to walk for a couple hours and then return to be checked later.

  • I had Cervadil with DD1 (induction at 34w2d for severe pre-e). Others have explained what it is quite well. I remember it being similar to them putting in a tampon (complete with little string) that is left in overnight. It hurt a bit, both insertion and removal, but nothing horrible.

    Good luck with your induction!

  • I am being induced on Tuesday and was told I will also need Cervidil prior to Pitocin.  According to the nurse I spoke with in L&D, Cervidil is like a tampon that they put in and generally leave in place for around 12 hours to soften/ripen your cervix for labor.  She said that for some women, it can actually put them into labor but generally is followed with Pitocin once the cervix has been prepped.  While the Cervidil is in place, apparently you are pretty much confined to the bed, but they let you get up once an hour to walk around, just as long as it doesn't come out.

Good luck with your induction.  I am crossing my fingers that mine goes smoothly too!
