Vitamin D Drops?

My pedi recommended Vitamin D Drops, but I'm wondering if they're really necessary or just a waste of money. I've read that I can just take my baby out in the sun for a couple minutes a day. I also take One A Day Women's Multivitamins (they're not prenatals) every night. Do I need these drops?

Re: Vitamin D Drops?

  • I know they recommended them for my DS's. I didn't do them. Now they said they are required? I'm curious in your answers as well. We're outside ALL the time, even though DD will be in the shade of course. Good question though.

  • I was told at my labor classes about the drops then again by the nurses that come do at home check-up and also by my LO's doc because she is breast-fed she wants her taking two drops a day instead of just one. Maybe it's pushed more in my region due to our crappy climate in Canada but that's enough recommendations for me to act on. it's super easy i just put two drops on the nipple and away she goes... also aren't babies not allowed in direct sunlight and cant wear sunscreen until a certain age??? that could factor in

  • Our pedi recommended it. We give ds di vo sol by enfamil. It is not expensive. We are on the same bottle, and ds is almost 2 months. Recommended for bf babies because most women lack vitamin d
  • They are necessary.    Vit. D is very important.
  • I just picked them up today for DD - it was funny watching her taste them. :) I don't know if they are necessary, but I don't want to have to worry about whether or not she makes it outside everyday.

My preemie is on Vit D, but that is also because she has osteopenia of prematurity.  It is super easy to give, and I just mix it in with her other daily meds.

  • I give DS Vit D because he's EBF and our pedi recommended it.  I don't want to have to worry about getting him outside every day.  I use the Carlson drops because I like that I only have to use one drop a day rather than a whole dropper full with some of the other brands.  Plus there isn't a whole bunch of other stuff in the Carlson drops, which I saw in other brands (flavoring, chemicals, etc).
