Do you wash LO's hands before eating?

I always wash my hands before meals, but it just recently occurred to me that I haven't been cleaning DS's hands.  I always clean him up afterwards, but not before.  Now I feel like a terrible mom.  DS has had one cold after another for the past few months, including a hospitalization.  I'm praying that wasn't my fault...

Re: Do you wash LO's hands before eating?

  • Never. Kids will crawl, then put their fingers in their mouths, crawl somewhere else, and again fingers in the mouth. You really aren't exposing him to any different germs that he hasn't been exposed to. It sucks, but this is a part of building his immune system. I only feel the need to wash my LO's hands when someone I don't know touches her. I hate when people do that.

LO definitely gets her hands wiped throughout the day, but only when I think it is needed. Don't beat yourself up over it. All of us moms are going to make mistakes and second guess decisions. It might be as simple as forgetting to wash off a strawberry, and it makes you feel bad, but you will drive yourself insane if you cannot find a way to let it go after the fact.

  • no but I probably should huh? Honestly this is one of the things I try to be lax about because I know she needs to be exposed to germs to build good immunity. I tend to be anal about cleanliness so when I think of little ways to let her get her germ fix without getting too dirty I sort of go for it. lol.

Nope. They get washed each morning and evening and 2 days a week right after daycare. And of course if they are visably dirty.

  • When I read the title of this I cringed because we definitely don't and probably should. We do, so we should get her into that habit! I'm all for germs and she definitely gets enough during the day. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't though!

Exactly this... And our lo (knock on wood) has only had 1 ear infection (before eating solids) and a couple of colds.

  • I just started washing DD's hands before dinner mainly for the fact that after she gets home from daycare we usually go outside and she is constantly crawling around in the dirt, mulch, picking up leaves etc. She loves the water so its pretty easy. If it was a huge fight I might be more lax about it.

Lol, this. I guess we should start making this part of our routine. I agree, they crawl around and put germs in their mouth.....but MH and I wash our hands before eating though so it's not a bad habit to start with her now.

    This exactly!

  • Nope. I've never even thought about it until now.
  • I am trying to remember to rinse them off before she eats. We have a dog, so there is constantly dog hair on her hands from crawling around. I guess it's not the germ factor that bothers me, it's the visible hair/dust/fuzz!
