Pregnant after IF

XP: Sucky MFM visit...

So yesterday was my birthday and we had a MFM appt scheduled.  I am almost positive I had scheduled it with the same doctor I saw last time but a new doctor came in to see us (we saw the original doc walking out when we were walking in so I know she wasn't even in the office).  To start my midwifery office had not faxed over any of the testing they had ordered for me (GTT, thyroid ultrasound, echocardiogram) and since MFM wasnt carbon copied they couldnt get the results themselves.  Oh and did I mention the midwifery office fax machine was broken so they couldnt fax over the results either. Luckily I had been CC on the bloodwork and the echo so I was able to get the results faxed over and the tech for the thyroid scan had told me it was clean.

MFM usually does a quick bedside ultrasound to check HR, etc.  Well I begged for gender guesses since it was my birthday.  The doctor sucked.  First off, I didn't get to see the screen once (and DH has no idea what he is looking at!).  She couldnt figure out which was Baby A and which was Baby B.  She saw HB but only listened to one, didnt give us HRs and didn't measure the babies to see if they are still on track. She did guess 2 girls but she said one baby had its legs crossed the whole time so she couldn't really see.  I am not putting any stock in her guesses since she seemed to have no idea what she was doing. I am more upset that I do not know HR.

She asked if I was still taking iron (I'm severely anemic), asked how my asthma was doing and that was it.  Handed us a slip to come back in a month. Never talked about my Metformin (I am IR due to PCOS).  Did not measure fundal height.  Did not do an internal exam (part of the reason I am seeing MFM aside from twins is that I had a LEEP 6 years ago and they are concerned about my cervical integrity during this pregnancy yet have never checked my cervix). Oh and she never asked if we had any questions.

I made sure to make the next appointment with the first doctor we had seen (who we really like and was very thorough) but WWYD? Would you just wait for the next appointment which is not until 6/12 by which point I will be 19 weeks or would you call and try to schedule a sooner appointment with the original doctor?  I am seeing my midwife on 5/24 but they are not really managing my Metformin, etc they were leaving that up to the MFM.

Re: XP: Sucky MFM visit...

  • First of all, I think 14 weeks is way too early to guess gender! I would try to get another appt. with the first doc you liked. However, will your insurance cover that? Mine probably wouldn't!

  • I wouldn't be too concerned about the genders. I know it is disappointing, but it would be frustrating for the dr to make the wrong guess. If you are really concerned about your cervical length, could you ask your midwife to get you in for a transvaginal u/s? I know they were not planning to check my cervical length until 18w, but I don't have any significant risk factors (other than twins). I am about to start seeing a MFM in addition to my OB and I've already been warned it is such a pain to get them to work together. Your story just confirms it! Hope things improve!

  • I am not disappointed about the genders, I knew it was a long shot.  I am more upset about not knowing the HRs (and not know which twin is which in the picture she printed).

My midwifery group doesnt do ultrasounds so they would have to refer me out for one.  My insurance probably would cover it because I have met my hospital deductible and MFM are considered hospital visits so they are covered 100% now.

I just feel like my visits are usually very thorough and informative and this one I feel like even if I had a question I wouldnt have had time to ask I was in and out of there so quickly.

  • 14 weeks is honestly way early for gender determination. And fundal height really doesn't mean much, esp this early in a pg.

  • The fundal height usually isn't a factor yet, but I'd think they would be checking ur cervix!  I also had a leep, and they started checking mine internally w trans vag u/s at 14 wks.   That's one of the reasons i go to a Mfm.  They actually were able to tell the gender for me at 14 wks, we just opted to be team green.

  • If it was me, I would try to get in sooner...

I was also told the genders at 14 weeks.  I am now almost 25 weeks and they haven't changed.  I get growth scans done on the babies every 3 weeks b/c it is a twin pregnancy and they also check my cervix.

Agreed....the u/s tech wouldn't even guess at 14 weeks for me.

I'd call the office to at least have your questions answered and then ask to see the other DR at your next appt.

  • I am so sorry you had a sucky appointment. I HATE being passed from I understand the sex guessing wasn't the greatest but it sounds like his attitude bothered you more than anything else. I wish they could play a little more happy. I know they see it everyday but a little more compassion would be nice.

If you feel like you can't wait until your next appt. for your other questions I would call and see if the original dr would see/talk to you before then. I see nothing wrong with that at all.
