Baby pool and chlorine?

I like to fill Finley's baby pool and wait a few days for the sun to warm it up because it is wayyyy too cold right after filling. Only problem is that after several days it starts to get a little slimy. Gross I know. Is there any way to safely add a pinch of chlorine to prevent this slime? Anyone ever heard of doing this in a kiddie pool? It almost like we are unable to use her pool because of coldness at first and then slime.  It takes Several days because while it is a baby pool it's not one of the super tiny ones. It is like this one...

Re: Baby pool and chlorine?

  • I didn't find anything specifically about chlorine, but I did find this. Which has a calculator for the appropriate amount of different chemicals.

ETA: I guess it does talk about chlorine, I didn't read the front page, just the calculator page!

  • Ive never heard of chlorinating a kiddie pool, but if i remember back to my lifeguard days, you have to make sure theres a certain amount of chlorine and the pH needs to be just right. Kind of a pain! A possible solution: My neighbors add a pot of boiling water to the cold water so their boys can use it that day. They dump theirs after each use but this is how they make it warmer for the kids. We used it once with them this year and the temperature wasn't too bad.

  • My parents used to add the pot of hot water to our pool as kids. As for the chlorine you can get a test kit and just add a bit at a time till you get it right, as for the PH you can also get away without adding it, it just make the water softer, easier on the skin and helps the chlorine last longer. For a pool that size I wouldn't bother with the PH, but that is just me.

  • Like pps I would suggest trying to find some way to get warm water added to the pool instead of resorting to chlorine.

If you think the pool is too big for a pot or so of water there are attachments you can buy to be able attach a hose to either a kitchen or bathroom faucet and run the hose outside to add warm water to the pool. (either a garden hose or  plastic hosing that you can buy at like Home Depot) The attachments are cheap to between $2-5 for most of them.

DH has so many hoses and attachments that he uses for his fish tanks (hes had tanks ranging from 100 to 600 gallons) and he has used them to empty the tanks outside either putting something out a door or window. If you have to take this route and have any questions let me know.

  • I would probably need about 10 pots of hot water to even make a dent in this thing. However, today I filled it up and it completely drained out so I guess maybe I can get one that is a little smaller since this one obviously has a hole. The sink faucet thing definitely would not work because it takes about 20 minutes to even fill up with the water hose on high so that would take forever. I guess the rip was a blessing in disguise since I now have an excuse to get one that is a little smaller.
  • I probably am going to look into the sink attachment thing though because it would be nice to be able to use water that is a little warmer.
  • Yes the connectors are very handy. And yes it will take a bit of time but of you can get one that works with a garden hose it mouth not take as long as you think. DH can get about 200 gallons of water in a tank in about 45 min or so using this method so a kids pool shouldn't take too long.

  • Not sure what you're looking for but we got a really tiny one from Target for $4.99.  It's probably 2 feet in diameter.  I've filled it up in the morning before and it was pretty warm in the afternoon.  Also we plan to take it to the beach and fill it with ocean water so she can play.
