1st Trimester

Diet soda

Is anyone drinking diet soda??  I always believed it isn't good for you in the first place b/c of the things in it but what about when your pregnant??  I like it b/c of the carbonation and I get tired of water.  Any opinons or get any advice from your dr.  I didn't think to ask but i'm wondering now.  Thanks!!

Re: Diet soda

  • I drink it a few times a week.

  • My little packet I got on my first visit says that artificial sweetners in "normal" amounts are fine.  That being said, I don't know what normal is.  Probably anything in moderation is cool.
  • I gave up soda the minute I got my BFP.  I occasionally have a sprite.  I drink lots of juice now.  And mineral water if I want the carbonation.
  • I probably have had 4 diet sodas since my bfp and several caffenine free cokes.  I've been doing water mostly.
  • Drink it in moderation.  Yes
  • I occasionally haave a diet soda because I think the regular sodas are way too sugary.  I wouldn't worry about the occasional diet soda.  I mostly drink water, but if I want a soda, I have it.
  • I occasionally have traditional diet soda (Diet Canada Dry is my serious favorite lately), but I've been trying to mostly have Diet Rite or Diet Coke with Splenda (no more than 1 a day) to minimize aspartame intake.
  • I think you should ask your OB. They all seem to have differing opinions. Mine said none in the first trimester and then in moderation after that.
  • FWIW artificial sweeteners are linked to cancer and birth defects.

If you like carbonation just not plain water try adding juices to your crabonated water, or try basil and cucumber, etc...

This is only POSSIBLY true in EXTREME cases.  As it is true with EVERY kind of food and ingestible or breathable or absorbable substance in the world.

I find that I have started to like flavored carbonated water.  It's got no sugar and no carbs.  You can get it at wal-mart or maybe your local grocery store.

It often contains artificial sweeteners as well.

  • My ob hasn't told me not to, but DH is super-crazy about me having any artificial sweeteners. He doesn't even want me to drink the powerade zero (or whatever it's called).
  • I have one a day.

Ok and you might be, what, the researchers here? It is a well-known fact that basically everything artificial is not as good for you as the real thing. Artificial sweeteners included. If you choose to expose your very young fetus to the risks associated that is up to you.

  • My ob said iif you're doing it now, then its ok. Moderation is the key though. If you used to drink a can a day then drink a can a day. Dont go and up. She also said splenda was fine.

    Drink it in moderation.  Yes

This is exactly what I was told by a nutritionist for my last pg when I had gestational diabetes. I drink them now too but not as much and with the diabetes I drank diet drinks.

  • You might want to try La Croix.  It's an unsweetened carbonated flavored water, but it's got just enough flavor to quench that soda craving.  I like the Cran-Raspberry and the Lime flavors best.

  • I've been told they are fine by my OBs...obviously not a 12 pack a day, but they said caffeine & artificial sweeteners are OK in moderation.  I don't drink coffee much because it has a lot more caffeine than soda.  I drank no diet/caffeine w/ DD#1 & lots (a couple sodas a day) w/ DD#2.  They were/are both very healthy babies/children.  I am on kid #3 & I drink 1 or 2 Diet Cokes most days.

  • I can tell you as an RD that research has proven both Aspartame and Splenda as safe for pregnant women.  Myself personally I did not have any during the 1st tri, but occasionally have a diet soda now occasionally.  I also find regular sodas to be too sweet/sugary and they only make me thirstier secondary to same.

You should avoid Saccharin, however, and all products containing it.

  • I don't drink soda or diet soda, but I've seen at some health food stores Natural Soda, which is made from Stevia, which is a natural sweetner.  I've never actually tasted it, but it's out there
