(Don't judge me, lol...its my guilty pleasure)
This last episode was ridiculous. The poor girl got sucked into a cascade of interventions through the exact same "methods" exposed by BOBB.
38 weeks-she asks for an induction because she is "uncomfortable." For some reason, her OB obliges (which was shocking to me, as his actions were clearly unethical).
She goes in for her induction, gets the pit and hangs around for a bit (while strapped down by all those tubes and wires)
She is offered an epi and takes it
10 hours later, her OB comes in and says her labor "hasn't progressed" as much as he would have liked. He tells her that a c-section is the proper route....and also tells her that the recovery time is about the same as a vaginal birth.
I felt so terrible for her watching that..
Re: 16 & Pregnant-A birth straight out of BOBB
Oh geez, the line about the recovery is so disturbing especially since my c-section delivery was horrendous and my vbac recover has been amazing despite tearing. At such a young healthy age she likely would have been fine if she had Waited until her body was ready.
Business of Being Born as in the documentary.
they are most likely on medicaid, low income women that are pregnant qualify and it typically covers the birth. If uninsured the hospital often just writes it off and eats the cost.

They also get a pretty hefty paycheck for appearing on the show. Not sure if that would cover it, but I'm sure it would help.
But you're right-even in the follow up shows, not one of those girls has ever mentioned experiencing financial hardship because of their hospital bills, so I assume they're taken care of one way or another.
Ugh. And they always have their nails done.
They must be super poor. Psh.
Could be why her mother started bawling when the OB dropped the
"c-section" ball...
Yeah I thought that episode was so wierd. I was like okay, so youre seriously going to induce her early just because shes uncomfortable?? And then after all that she had to go for a c-section. ... hmmm.. maybe thats because baby isn't ready to come out yet?! That doc scared me and his response about c-sec. recovery was not what it should have been.
ETA: and I saw the connection to BOBB as well, so sad.
Haha, truth. Interesting how all the other bills pile up, but not that one... Also interesting how they so rarely go to the goodwill to try and buy all those things that are oh so expensive in stores.
The L&D nurse in me was yelling at the screen during this episode. Seriously? Elective 38w induction? "Are you ready for your epidural?" -- I HATE it when it's phrased like that; like an epidural HAS to be part of a birth, like there's one in the med room with your name on it, etc. Ugh. Where was a nurse advocating for her, getting her up and moving...ugh.
I was so frustrated because they were genuinely the most responsible, mature couple that I've seen yet on that show.
Wow, didn't catch that.....even better.
Sad, so, so sad.
Informed consent FTW!
Agreed and this was after 10 hours of labor....really? now 10 hours of labor is cause for an emergency CS? This whole process makes me so sad. Im sure that she would have been able to deliver vaginally if she had just waited until her body (and baby) was ready.
Obviously she did no research. Most of them take epi on the show. I hate when they ask "Are you ready for epi?" as well. It's not a question that gives good choices. At least she did not seem to take it as a horror story birth.
It was nice to see a guy who actually is a good dad and partner for a change. At least he seemed so...
