TTC after 35

Clomid question

My doc has had me taking clomid for 5 cycles now on days 3-7. I was just doing some reading here and noticed that most people seem to take it on days 5-9. So I did a bit of research and found that's the norm. Is this a big mistake on her part?

I know I ovulate. I've always ovulated, that has never been my problem so I'm not entirely sure what the reasoning is for me taking to begin with. I just know that most docs don't recommend you taking this for more than 6 cycles and it's just gonna piss me off if this screws everything up. As it is my refill is for two more cycles.

Re: Clomid question

  • I can't answer your question re: the timing of the Clomid, but I have had the same question regarding why we regular ovulators should take Clomid at all. After poking around on the internet, I think the answer is that it is considered a possible cure for "Luteal Phase Defect" - Clomid can make ovulation occur earlier, lengthening your luteal phase.  Maybe your OB wanted to trigger ovulation for you as early as possible?  Again- this is just a guess, my OB didn't explain and for some reason I didn't ask for an explanation.

  • I took Clomid days 5-9 the first time and days 3-7 the two times after.  I think it's normal for the days to vary.  I was prescribed Clomid to help my progesterone level because it was too low.  I would say 10.6 is low.  Progesterone is what keeps you pregnant so it's very important.  12 is definitely better.

I ovulate on my own and was prescribed it days 3-7, as well. Hopefully you are seeing an RE and are being monitored throughout your cycle. Best of luck to you!

I ovulate on my own, but my RE prescribed Clomid + Ovidrel trigger for a "stronger" ovulation. (Try Googling super-ovulation.) When you ovulate one your own each month, you produce 1 (presumably mature) follicle. The meds are to help mature more than 1 follicle (usually 2-3) in hopes of giving the sperm more than 1 target to shoot at.
