Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone had allergy testing on baby (eczema, hives)

DD has eczema. And now she just broke out in hives...She only gets breast milk.

I can't seem to figure out what causes the eczema, it really flares up when she cries or the temperature gets warmer. We live in (dirty) New York City (Manhattan) so I know, that the air isn't very clear.I've used Dreft now I switched to All Free&Clear. All her clothes are cotton,I threw out her area rug, but our windows face 3rd Avenue, which I can't fix for a few more months...

I've done dairy, soy, chocolate, tomato elimination so far, with no improvement.

On Monday, we are seeing a pediatric allergist.I know, that testing at 4 month is probably too early, but I'm so desperate to help my baby.

Has anyone done allergy testing on their LO this young?

Thanks!!

  • I haven't had it done on my LO but I am a nurse  at an allergist and have tested babies this young before. The youngest I've tested is a 2 month old.

  • Have you tried the TED (total elimination diet)?  Could be nuts, eggs, meat, chicken, many other things other than what you have eliminated.  I do know they will test it is just that it is not always very accurate that young.

  • I personally have eczema (and I suspect DS has it too, he's gotten a few patches so far).  Mine gets irritated by sweat; so any time it's warm out or I exercise it gets worse, which may explain why your LO's flares when she cries.  If it's really eczema, there's nothing you can do to get rid of it, you just have to manage it. I hope you figure out what causes the hives though!

Our Dr. recommended using Aquaphor on DS - they even make a baby kind.  I put it on him as soon as he gets a bath - pat dry, then apply to seal in the moisture.

  • We had ds done at 1.  It hadn't come up before then but we found out he was allergic to peanuts and the pedi thought it would be a good idea to see if anything else was hiding.  For the record, it was worthless because we found things he was allergic to that they said he wasn't and we wasted $1200 on the testing.  After we told the doctor that he said that the blood tests can be inaccurate for babies.  Ugh.

  • One of our girls has eczema flare ups too. We just always put tons of aquaphor on it before she goes to bed every night, even when it's not too bad and that has seemed to make a BIG difference. I do suspect she may be allergic to our dog who mainly stays at our in laws right now, but everytime he comes home she has a swollen eye or rash flare up. I wanted to get her tested too so I can be sure if this is the case...cause then we'll have to obviously figure something out about our dog coming home for good or not:(

  • I've heard that eczema is often times inherited. My husband had it real bad when he was a baby and now our LO has it as well. I've found that shea butter does a lot to help improve the condition of it, but it never actually goes away. If I skip a day in putting it on, it gets very dry and crusty.
