oz from pump ? (xp from BF board)

I pump during the days at work, and usually get about the same from both breasts (within an oz or so).  I also feed and pump after the overnight (DD will only drink so much, and then I still am full).  So, last night, DD was up all night eating.  I stayed with one side, because it wasn't a full feed each time (and I was exhausted).  So, this morning, I pumped (she refused to BF) and got 1.5 oz out of the side she was eating from all night, and 8 oz out of the other.  I know this isn't an exact science, but could that mean that she had about 6.5 oz overnight?  If so, wooooooo hoooooo!!!!!!!  That would mean she may be starting to eat better!

Re: oz from pump ? (xp from BF board)

  • That's awesome! Idk how I got off with my pattern cuz I always was really good at alternating sides, but my right side is always WAYYYY fuller than the left. Like I will get 4 oz out of the right and 1.5 out of left. It's so annoying. So DS eats like 3x on the right to every 1x on the left and the right boob is noticably bigger than the left. Anyway, that's great your LO is starting to eat better!

  • Babies are more efficient than the pump. It's possible she ate more than that. It's really kind of too hard to say one way or the other.

  • I don't post often, but I had this same problem.

I read on kellymom.com that in order to even them back out you actually feed them more on the "empty" side. Basically by feeding LO only on the "full" side you're telling that side to produce more more more, while you're telling the "empty" side to slow down. Basically encouraging the lopsided-ness. Your breasts are never actually "empty", so I started nursing more often on my small side and strictly pumping on my other (I get less from pumping). I've been doing this for about 3 weeks and they are noticeably more even.

I've wanted to try that, but when I do, they full side gets super engorged. Do I just have to deal with that for a few days?

Express just enough so the engorgement goes away, but don't empty the breast. By leaving milk in there you are telling the breast it's making too much, and it will eventually slow down. You don't have to stay in pain, but definitely keep it semi-full.
