postpartum urinary incontinence- please tell me it gets better.

Any second-time moms or May mommas who are ahead of me in their recovery who've had this?

My daughter is only 4 days old so I know it's early, but I'm still leaking a lot of pee. It's not like the pregnancy stress incontinence brought on by coughing or sneezing. There doesn't seem to be anything specific that brings it on and I leak a lot of pee without even realizing it's happened. I'll go to the bathroom and realize that my pad is soaked with pee and my underwear are wet. As if it leaving the house with a newborn didn't sound challenging enough already, this makes it sound impossible :( Anyone else gone through this who can tell me it gets better?

  • It gets better as the swelling goes down. If you still have problems at your PP visit, tell your OB.

  • It gets better...I had it too and I was Kegel Queen. I noticed if I didn't go to the bathroom right when I needed to in the first few days, I leaked. But now it has stopped and I ave total bladder control! Get on your Kegels girl!!!! :)

  • Last pregnancy I had it bad! This time I had a c section and the recovery is so much better for that one reason. It does get better. For me it lasted about 2 weeks.

DD was 9lbs 6oz and the leaking pee was insane postpartum. To be honest, it was a problem for me for a few months, but I think mine took so long to clear up because of DD's size.  Just wear poise pads. It will get better, but it takes some time.

  • The first few days, when I stood up I peed. Not just a little. That stuff will eventually go away. I continued to pee when I sneezed long after giving birth, and it got worse with my current pregnancy, but there was never the fear of just random bladder loss once I had healed up and recovered from my delivery.

  • It lasted about a week and a half for me but definitely got better as the days went on.

  • Some of it is fluid from your uterus too I believe I was told. Mine stopped around the 1 week mark!
  • I had it worst with my first, had to pelvic floor exercises with a PT... she recommended a dvd by hab-it and it worked great!  https://www.amazon.com/Hab-It-Pelvic-Tasha-Mulligan/dp/0510539610

So give your self a couple weeks to recover then talk to OB about strengthening your pelvic floor if you are still having issues!
