Question for STM+ and big babies

I've been lurking on the c-section board and the natural labor board, just to get some information and personal experiences from both types of delivery, but I'd love to know from the STMs on this board.

If you had a baby that was deemed "large" (9lbs+), how was your delivery experience, and would you do anything differently this time around?  I was 10lbs12oz and my DH was 11lbs8oz.  I do not have GD, which can be a factor in having a large baby, and as of right now I am measuring and growing right on track.  However, I would love to know your experiences in case this little lady turns out to be a BIG bundle of joy!

TIA!

My son was 21.5 inches tall and 9 lbs 1 oz. I delivered naturally without an epidural ( because the anesthesiologist couldn't get one in, not because I didn't want one) and aside from them having to use a vacuum and me needing about a million stitches (with some reconstruction work in the office a couple weeks later) it wasn't that bad. Good luck. My doc made me nearly cry today when he said the second baby I usually a half a lb bigger then the first!

  • DS was 9lbs, 21 inches. I only gained 19lbs, so no one expected him to be so big. I don't think his size really affected anything.

I intended on having a med-free birth, but I ended up being gbs+ so that meant I needed an IV/meds and was stuck in bed. I got to the hospital and was 4-5cm dilated. After being in labor for 26+ hours, my labor started slowing down and I was stuck at 6-7cm so I ended up agreeing to Pitocin. I was afraid of what the contractions would be like with Pit and I was dead tired, so I got my epi at the same time. I was able to nap which was awesome. My water broke on my own and I was ready to push not long after. They turned my epi off (per my request) so by the time I was pushing, I felt quite a bit. I only pushed for 30-40 mins.

I think if I was able to walk around or bounce on my exercise ball I would have been able to progress on my own but I didn't really have the option. I am trying again for med-free, but if I end up in the same situation I will have have them break my water before going straight to Pit.

I can't complain and I still think I had a great labor/birth. I had a tiny tear and my OB said I probably didn't need a stitch but put one in just to be safe. I was up walking around pretty quickly and had an awesome, super easy recovery. I remember thinking "this is so much easier that people said it would be". I actually look forward to labor and delivery again because I want to see if what I learned the first time will help me with my med-free plans.

  • DS was 9 lbs 14 oz and 21.5 inches long. I ended up with a c-section after a 30 hour failed induction 5/6 days overdue.

I am really hoping to vbac this time.

Throughout my pregnancy with DS I was measuring about 1.5 weeks ahead. This time I am right on track....so hopefully this baby will not be as big as older brother. I'm also a lot more active this pregnancy (side effect of having a toddler).

Have an open mind and know that our bodies are (for the most part) meant to do this. Good luck!

As for what I would do differently....staying active through my pregnancy...NOT get induced...this time I will be starting other methods of induction at 38 weeks.

  • Logan was 9 lbs and 23 inches. He was stuck in my ribs, never dropped, and after a 24 hour induction I never felt one contraction or dilated at all. At that point I had a c-section. My recovery was great!

  • Thank you for sharing your experiences, ladies!  It's nice to have some perspective on this, and great to know that you have adorable, healthy children!

DS was 6lbs 14oz and I had an emergency c-section because he wouldn't even come out with forceps and an episiotomy.

People can deliver all sized babies vaginally and can have c-sections with any size baby as well
