my 12wk old is big...90 percentile weight, 70 percentile height at last appointment 4 weeks ago. i think she's about 14lbs now, if not more (i don't have accurate scale at home).
i used a meitai carrier (infantino) when she was about 4-8 weeks..but i think she's too big to sit in it newborn-style (froggy). it doesn't look comfortable, and she also refuses to do it unless she's really tired. she's not quite ready to split her legs as far as the meitai needs her to..... what are my options?
i keep getting told the ergo is the best carrier ever, but i don't think it'll solve my problems. (i also want an ergo because the tying of the meitai is getting tiring!)
thanks!
Re: baby-wearing a medium-large baby?
First of all your in your siggy is so pretty!
An ergo might be a good choice, I have never had one
What I really recommend is a woven wrap. It gives you the flexibility to tie it yourself and that will help you get her more comfortable. Also you can do a back wrap, maybe she is fidgety because she wants to see more and that will help. I had my son on my back as a newborn and I have seen lots of moms who do the same with a young baby and woven with practice. It is just an idea. Also I can carry my son in it and he is almost 2! I have seen people carry a 5 year old in woven. In other words she won't grow out of it soon.
A ring sling may be another good option as far as comfort for her goes, but it probably won't help her be less fidgety.
So, I'm lurking.. but I thought I'd chime in. I've got a big ol' baby and he's 2 days younger than your LO. He's almost 17lbs now. I have an Ergo and it's just not working for us right now. I'm petite, it's too bulky. He's too big for the infant insert, but not really big enough for the sitting position.
I've been using the Baby K'tan and we both like it so far. The tying is pretty minimal and it's super easy to just pop him in.

thanks. i've read about tying the ribbon before and tried it..but it took too too much fabric away from the main-square and then it only went to up to mid-back..her head support isn't 100% there yet (she's only 12wks) so i can't carry her like that for long. i can't seem to find any videos or pictures online to do it properly-----do you know how? thanks.
also, i'm trying to justify the purchase of an ergo.. so more people need to tell me why it's awesome!
Check on thebabywearer.com. That site rocks.
In terms of getting a SSC, have you looked at Beco? They are an up-and-coming underdog that many moms prefer because of the internal harness.
Do you have a babywearing group in your area? That is a great way to try many options (and get encouragement to increase your stash, if you are so inclined--ha, ha).

i've touched on beco and boba, but not enough research---i just picked ergo because it was the most popular......sort of like i registered for a bjorn because it was the most popular....silly me. i'm now obsessively looking at thebabywearer.com thanks.
but (i researched more in-depth before replying just now) now i'm leaning toward the boba. crap. there are too many choices! it still looks like nothing will fix my problem with my dd's long legs and inability to spread them so far just yet, but i do know i want something quicker than my MT.
i love it. thanks! this is totally what i needed. i will try this when she wakes up! although i'm not sure how much head support she'll have now, it'll be much better than when i tried froggy'ing her long legs.
DS is over 20 lbs and not even five months old yet and we love our Ergo. We don't use the insert anymore but we do use the pillow when wearing him with his legs out, and he loves it.
