C-sections

weight loss slow with recovery?

I feel like my weight loss is going to be very slow while recovering from c-section. So far it is! Does the pain medication slow it down? I am EBF and thought it would come off quicker. I am curious how much weight you lost after your c-section the first month? I am down 20 but gained 35 and I need these other 15 lbs. off quick!

Re: weight loss slow with recovery?

  • I had a massive internal infection after mine, plus was EBF.  So I was down to within 5lbs of pre baby weight by 3 weeks.  But that was only because I couldn't eat much for a week because I was sick, it was not a healthy way to get back down to prebaby weight.

My DS is 2 and 1/2 months and I can just now fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans and pants...sigh.  I gained 28 pounds I think and still technically have about 4 to go.

  • I'm 5 months pp, and still have 15-20 lbs to go. I'm EBF and eat healthy, so it's SO annoying. I'm not really doing anything too drastic until I'm done BFing.

  • I gained nearly 40lbs. I'd lost 13 at my 2-week check, then gained 3 at my 6-week check! Talk about depressing! I know why, though-- stress eating due to our 2-week NICU stay and difficulty transitioning from EP to EBF. Now that I'm cleared to resume normal activity, we'll be taking lots of walks. And I have begun to get back in track with better eating.

DD1 was delivered vaginally, and by the time she was 1, I'd lost all the baby weight plus another 20+ lbs and was in the best shape of my adult life! I'd like to be back to that by the time this LO is 1.

  • It took me a full year to get the baby weight off. I lost 15-20 lbs initially, but then the other 20 took awhile. Is your ticker accurate? I wouldn't be stressing if your baby is three weeks old, give it some time.

My weight loss was slow, because I didn't exercise.  I gained 55lbs with DS and it took about 9-10 months to lose it.  I'll be honest, weight loss was the last thing on my mind 3 weeks postpartum.

Well... swimsuit season is just around the corner, and I have tickets for the family to go to Maui in October...so I am concerned and motivated at the same time.

I lost all my weight both times pretty quickly but it took a little bit longer to get everything back in shape. After ds1, I didn't really have much time to tone back up b/c I got pg 6mths later. AFter ds2, I lost all the weight (21lbs) within a month and once I started running I lost an add'l 20lbs plus toned up. I'm hoping this 3rd time I can do the same.

That's not slow weight loss, you lost 20 lbs in 3.5 weeks! You just grew a baby and it took a while to gain the weight and it will take a bit to lose it. If anyone gives you grief about not looking like a model in a bathing suit right after you had a baby, they deserve a throat punch! Be gentle with yourself! It will come off.

Thank you, i needed to hear this! :)

  • I gained almost 70 pounds while pregnant.  I'm still baffled at how this happened due to the fact that I teach dance all day long and did up until the week before I went into labor!  But at 2 week pp I was down 42 pounds!!!  Can we say water weight...lol.  Since tuesday i've lost another 2 pounds.  I still have about 25 to go...i'm only 2.5 weeks pp so I haven't done anything active like walk or anything, so i'm hoping once I start walking with lo I'll be able to lose the rest!  I breastfeed, pump, and formula feed.  My little guy was almost 9.5 pounds so EBF just didn't cut it for him!  But i'm finding since having him I don't have much of an appetite and i'm chugging water all day!!!  Also i'm a neat freak and seem to be cleaning all day long as well.

  • I think it is unnatural for your body to drop all the weight right away. Or more people hang onto some weight for a bit than the ones who drop it all in 6 weeks. I had a vaginal birth the first time and didn't drop the last 10 lbs until I weaned at 4 mo pp.

So this time i will have a c section and i cant speak to that weight loss but your journey sounds very similar to mine with v birth.

  • I don't think there's any link between the means of birth and the rate of weight loss.  Every woman is going to lose the baby weight differently.

Mine came off fast.  I gained 50 total and after a month I'd lost about 35 of that.

    I lost 24 out of 29lbs in the 1st 7 days....

however, I was very ill feeling and got an infection post-op.  I had no appetite until about 2 weeks after he was born.

  • It took until about 2-3 months PP to lose all the weight both times. It took until 6.5 months before my hips went back in place and I could fit in pre-pregnancy pants. Give it time. 3 weeks is nothing. You'll likely see some more weight loss when you can do more physical activity at 6+ weeks.
