Baby Names

Galilea

DH loves the science names. He is trying to sell me on Charles Darwin for a boy, but would also accept Kepler or Tycho.

I saw Galilea on the top 1,000 list (there's a Mexican actress named Galilea), and it struck me. It fits my criteria pretty well (very feminine name with cute nn possibilities), is fairly unusual, and would probably tickle DH.

Thoughts? Too frilly?

Re: Galilea

  • I think its cute, but as soon as I saw it I want to break into Bohemian Rhapsody.  :)

  • I kind of like it actually.  I think it would fall into the guilty pleasure name for me though.  I don't think I could get the courage to use it.  That being said...if you and DH love it, use it.

  • I like it! If someone told me their little girl was named Galilea, I would think, "Wow, that's a pretty cool name." I also like the idea of giving a girl, and not just a boy, the name of an important scientific figure. We've strongly considered giving this baby (a boy) the middle name Sagan after Carl Sagan.
  • My brain went to Galilee, not Galileo.  As in the Biblical location where Jesus lived. Not sure I'd want to saddle a child with such a heavy load like that, especially if she becomes a helllraiser.

As for more science-type names, interesting theme.

  • I instantly thought Bohemian Rhapsody. Although I don't hate it, just a strange association.  And Please Please Please don't name a boy Tycho.

This. I immediately thought Biblical not scientific.

Is there a bad association with Tycho that I'm missing?

  • I absolutely love it! Galilea is one of my top GP names! I would love to know someone used it.

ETA: I would pronounce it like Galilee.

Me too. I still think it's a cool name though, and I would be tickled to meet a little girl named this.

I also think it's cute, but I had the same reaction re: Bohemian Rhapsody. Smile

  • How are you pronouncing it? I immediately thought like Galileo the astronomer except with an a at the end. But some ladies are reading it as Galilee? I like it pronounced the first way. Cute choice!

  • At first glance, I was, like, no way. But after saying the name out loud and hearing the meaning behind it, I'm totally sold! Now I'll be disappointed if you don't use it :)

I really like it!  I think a name like Charles Darwin might saddle the kid with an ideology they may or may not accept (as opposed to just using Charles or Darwin, which would be fine).  But I think Galilea is freaking awesome.

Yeah, I was thinking Galileo with an a, but now I see what others are saying.

Thanks for the feedback, ladies. I'll have to bring this one to DH's attention!

Tycho?  As in Brahe?  I kind of love it.
