I've been reading this board since the beginning of my pregnancy, and it's been a great inspiration to keep me focused on a VBAC. I had a c-section 2.5 years ago with my DD after failure to progress. I got to 8cm and they finally figured out she was posterior and tilted. I think I could have had her vaginally, but I was completely exhausted from a long labor and no sleep. My recovery was terrible. So, this time around, I've strived for a VBAC. My doc said I was good to go, I just had to go into labor before 41 weeks. Yesterday, he said he would check me next week and see if I was progressing at all. And, if my cervix was favorable, he'd admit me to the hospital and break my water on 5/20. I'd be 40 weeks 3 days. It was totally up to me.
I was extremely uncomfortable with my DD, this little nugget not so much. I am also not in a hurry this time. I know what it's like to have a newborn! Also, I have a 2.5 year old at home to care for as well. If I get to next week, and I've progressed, I am afraid to go back into the hospital because of my past experience.
What would you do? TIA
Re: VBAC advice
I'd opt not to do it given that things are fine with you and the baby. Breaking your water puts you on the clock and there is no guarantee that labor will start.
You could be signing up for a RCS without meaning to by trying to induce. I'd do this as a last resort at 41 weeks to avoid going directly to a RCS.
I agree with this. I'd go as long as they will allow (in my case it was 41 weeks) before trying to help labor along. If you get to the point that they are trying to force a RCS because you "ran out of time" then ask for them to break your water, etc to give it a try.
If you are favorable, couldn't he just sweep your membranes during your appointment? Can you wait until you're actually 41weeks to head into the hospital?
I had a very similar story to yours and definitely share your fear of a prolonged hospital birth. I will not be going into the hospital for induction until I'm a full 41 wks and have reached my deadline. If I can find a way to buy myself a day, I'll do whatever it takes.
But, before that I plan to try accupuncture, castor oil and every other natural induction method in the book. Personally, I'd rather my water break on it's own during active labor.
