Natural Birth

Question for Homebirth Mamas

I'm 31 weeks and am in the process of filling out my LOA paperwork.  I just found out from another pregnant coworker that we can file for short-term disability, in addition to our unpaid FMLA.  I was unaware of this and very excited to hear.  However, now I'm wondering whether or not I will qualify, as I'm having a homebirth.  I know how insurance companies can be, and even though my vagina will be stretching as much as hers, I'm worried that my claim will be denied.  I'm delivering with a Direct Entry Midwive (DEM), not a Nurse-Midwife.  She is not in practice with any docs, and I am not receiving concurrent care with an OB/GYN.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this situation?  Were you able or unable to get these benefits?  I'm so tired of having to climb uphill with big business and the gov't in order to make my own decisions regarding health!

 Thanks!

I don't work for a company large enough for FMLA or short-term disability- I work part-time and my boss just gave me a paid leave.  However, my husband gets paternity leave at his job.  He was given a total paid leave of 12 weeks for his job (and also had to file for FMLA).  However, I do recall he didn't get paid for the first day because I was not in a hospital overnight.  We use a CNM and she completed the forms.  Not sure if it means anything but our homebirth was also 100% covered under a medical insurance too.

I'm currently out on disability prior to delivery, and am seeing a home birth CNM. I would assume that as long as your mw is legally able to provide care/deliver in your state, then she should be legit to sign your forms for leave. Why don't you ask her- I'm sure you're not the first one with this question!

Both of my maternity leaves are considered short term disability.  If I remember correctly, I just had to notify our human resource office of when the leave starts (or started if it's after labor) and they do the paperwork.  I am using a homebirth CNM but she will be going through my insurance.  Not sure if this directly affects anything since they're technically two different insurance companies.  I would ask your HR department to be 100% sure on what you can get covered and what the process is to make sure that happens.  Home birth or not, you should still be covered the same way.

    This.

I just gave all my paperwork to my CPM and she filled it out.  No problems.

  • i could be wrong, but i don't believe that STD or FMLA have anything to do with the type of birth you have or who your providers are (except for the length of time/amount of claim you might get with STD varying between vag vs. c/s births). if you unexpectedly had a UC, you'd still be entitled to STD and FMLA if your employer provides those benefits, right?

coverage under your medical insurance plan is completely different and does totally depend on your provider.

i have planned 2 HBs. the first was with a CNM and 100% covered under my medical insurance plan. i ended up with a c/s and got 8 weeks of STD plus 12 weeks of FMLA (none paid).

the second birth was an HBAC wtih a CPM. i paid OOP and was reimbursed approximately 40%. because i had a vag birth, i only got 6 weeks of STD paid. i still got my 12 weeks (unpaid) FMLA.

like others have suggested, your MW has certainly helped other mamas with the same in the past!

  • Yes, I have experience with your exact situation.

I had a homebirth with #2 with a traditional midwife (not a CNM).  She signed my paperwork and it was no problem.  I got the disability insurance checks just like I did with birth #1, which was a hospital birth.

  • STD has nothing to do with the location of the birth. Just have your Midwife fill out and sign your paperwork for HR. I just went thru this and had no problems.

I didn't have any problems with short term disability and I gave birth at home with a midwife.  I don't think it matters where you have the birth, you still gave birth and they are required to give you the disability.
