i fail at the Google

Hey friends,

I was following the whooping cough thread that started last night and people kept mentioning that they lived in a state that had a whooping cough epidemic. I tried googling to find out which states were having a problem and the only state that kept popping up was Washington. I am sure there are more but today the interwebs are not being my friend. So, tech savy bumpers, can anyone help me out? Which states are having big time whooping cough problems?

Thank you!

Re: i fail at the Google

  • I was literally just doing the same thing...and Washington is all I could find also.  I am very curious about this.  I actually just text my sister asking her if I would be crazy to demand everyone get a vaccination.  This will be the 5th grandchild in my family and I would like to think I am the most level headed of all my siblings, but none of them demanded shots... I just  don't know what to do!

  • Hmm...

I haven't found a chart or anything yet.  But try googling your state with "whooping cough" or with "Pertussis" and outbreak

    https://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/outbreaks.html

Apparently Washington state has a big one right now.

Another option is this map has some.  But if you area is not on the map, I would not assume you are OK.  You might want to ask your doctor at your next appointment if there is trouble in your area.

On this map, you can remove all but whooping cough and click on the dot to get more info.

not sure about other states, but there was a story on the news last night that the county i live in (Johnson County, KS) is having an outbreak.

I would say I'm also one of the more level headed people in my fam.  But I'm the last of 6 kids who ALL have children (MANY children ) and I'm the only one that requested vaccines.   But It's not a huge deal for them to get it.  Insurance pays for it.. they can get it just about anywhere (including pharmacies), and it isn't very painful and doesn't make  you sick.
Regardless of if its an outbreak in YOUR state, outbreaks start with one person, who may just happen to be traveling through from washington.  I'd go ahead and request (maybe not demand) that everyone gets the vaccine and then just be careful to make sure people are washing hands well and all before holding your LO
  • I don't have an answer for you other than what you've already found out, but Washington is up into 1,000 cases. It's great because that's where I live... My hospital already has a protocol in case someone comes in showing symptoms.
