This is a repost from March, but given the danger I just wanted to tell a potentally completely different audience about this:
-----------I went to my OB appt for my 35.5 week check up, by the end of the appointment I was being sent to the hospital and was there on monitored bed rest until they decided to induce me on friday night, and my daughter was born on Saturday. I had been being monitored for possible pre-eclampsia (which I did develop) but I also developed Cholistasis of pregnancy. The symptom that sent me to the hospital? I had been itching all over my body. The scary thing (and the reason they decided not to wait to induce labor) is that while Cholistasis is moderately dangerous for me - my liver stops being able to filter bile salts and they build up in the skin making it itchy - they can build up in the baby's heart making it possible that her heart could suddenly stop with no warning.I thought I was itchy due to allergies or pollen. Mentioning this probably saved my baby's life. Just want to give everyone a heads up.
--------
FYI: my daughter is now almost 2 months old and is perfectly healthy.
Re: The strangest, yet very serious symptom I had no clue about.
I am glad you two are okay!
It's scary, because that's such a simple symptom to have. Was it extreme itching, or just itching everywhere? Just curious.
This, I kinda would also like to know what the itching was like?
Did anyone else get super itchy right after reading this???
Glad you and baby are ok, OP!
I have really itchy legs each night, but I just thought it was dry skin,
Now I am nervous ...
I asked my doctor at my 36 week appointment, and he gave it one look and told me it was nothing - a "normal" pregnancy thing. I keep thinking it may have something to do with water retention/swelling in that area, making my skin tight and itchy.
I'm going to ask again today - I'm seeing another doctor from the office today. Worth a second look, in my opinion!
Oops, meant to quote that last post - my bad!
I actually just got tested for cholestasis on Wednesday and am awaiting test results. The itching is the worst on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet as well as your abdomen but not as severe . Other symptoms include jaundice, tiredness, light colored bowels(tmi sorry), and sharp pain in top right quadrant of abdomen. I have experienced most of these symptoms so dr wanted to test me. Will be finding out results today. Hopefully dont have it but not sure if that will be the case.
Now in addition I also found out that these symptoms could be gallstones and not cholestasis. While pregnant the gallstones will back up your liver causing the bile to increase. So if cholestasis diagnosis is false will be checked for those as well.
Hope this helps with anyone who is having similar symptoms or are just worried that they might have this condition.
It was the kind of itching that was all over and insatiable - I had to will myself to stop. Once I scratched my arm my belly would itch and then my leg then my arm again. It was like there should have been a rash or bite there but nothing was there, just normal skin.
If you get scratching fits (you just keep scratching everywhere for a while) call your OB ASAP.
FYI - it is a blood test to check bile salt levels and an ultrasound of the baby's heart too. Once I was confirmed to have it and the high risk OB looked at her heart I was induced later that day.
The only symptom I had was itching.
