Parenting after a Loss

one way roller baby...

DD has been rolling tummy/back and back/tummy for quite some time now. However, she will only roll one direction. I'm confident that she CAN. I strongly feel that she just WON'T. We have tried putting a favorite toy just out of reach in order to encourage her to roll that way, but she will just find something else to play with after a few seconds. Anyone else have a similar exerience?

She first rolled tummy to back about 3 weeks ago..this weekend she did back to tummy..I kinds of nudge her so she knows "how"..and I try to get her one arm over her head so its not in her way so she figures out how to

  • DS did this too.  We tried all sorts of things (even blocking him in) to get him to roll the other way.  I'd also put him on our bed, lay on the side he usually rolled to (thus blocking his roll) and make him try to roll the other way.  He eventually started rolling both ways.  They seem to just pick a side that they prefer.

She does this to herself all of the time.  She will roll and roll until she runs into a "road block".  Then she just gets frustrated or just stops rolling.  I guess we'll just have to wait it out.

DS was the same. He rolled back to belly long before he rolled belly to back.

He also only rolled in one direction and then one day he started rolling all over in all directions. I think they have a preference at first and stick to it until something clicks and they decide to go the other way. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • DD loves rolling onto her right side and then onto her tummy.  DCP tries to get her to roll the other way, but I'm not concerned at the moment.  I prefer my right side, too!

  • Mine only rolls belly to back and has for a couple of months.  He has tried to go back to belly a few times but gives up before he makes it over.

  • I meant to respond to this the other day, sorry for the delay.

Dylan does this.  He can and has rolled to the left, but favors rolling to the right so much.  In his case its due to his torticollis.  His head tilts a little to the right, so its easier for him to get momentum in that direction.  His PT basically suggested we do exactly what you mentioned you were already doing: block him from rolling right periodically and put toys and other interesting things to the left.

The good news is that Dylan is getting better about rolling left.  I think he needed to get his strength up a little more and work on some of his flexibility (torticolis in his neck).
