Has anyone read... (parenting book)

Has anyone read "Montessori from the Start"?  I received the book as a gift from a coworker's wife who has a lot of the same beliefs I do with respect to food and environmental responsibility.  It seems to be a good book so far, and pretty well aligned with the ideas I've had on child raising.

What parenting books are you reading?  Do you have a specific parenting method in mind, or are you going to go with the flow?

Re: Has anyone read... (parenting book)

  • The books I usually read are more the "how to calm down a screaming infant", "how to get your child to sleep more than 45 minutes" and "how to tame tantrums".

I figure I don't need a book to teach DD about our belief system.  That will happen day in, day out.   Actions speak louder than words.  We are definitely more a "go with the flow" type family.

  • I didn't mean that it teaches about things like food and environmental responsibility, I just meant that she and I had the same views on other topics, so she figured I'd like it.  It talks a lot (so far) about giving your kids age appropriate jobs and designing their spaces for efficient learning and exploration.  Hopefully (and this is a hope, not an expectation) it will help cut down on tantrums and such a little bit.

This sounds like me. I think that I have about 6 different books on how to get your child to sleep.

I think this probably works well with older children...4+, when you can reason with them.  Where I'm at now, there is no logic in the world that can get my 2 year old back to sanity, once she's over the edge.  The other day, we had a 30 minute meltdown because she wanted bread while we were in Home Depot.  Not cheerios, apple sauce, pretzels or any of the other snacks I had in my bag......BREAD.  When she finally starts breathing again, we can hug and talk about what happened.

I do agree with the Montessori learning theories, I just don't think they're the cure to toddler behavior issues.

  • I started reading that book when DS was a few month old and thought it was laughable that they expected a baby to sleep in a bed on the floor at that young...I realized more so when he was crawling how much FUN that would be  ;)

I recommend reading books on BF if thats what you want to do, sleeping (pick a mid of the road author not an extreme one) and just basic baby care. Your parenting style will chnage with time and baby will evolve with it.
