I have been thinking about my IF appointment and wondering what will be discussed, decided and prescribed if anything...so I googled it.
What a mistake. I know there are pregnant 40 yr olds..why does the internet make it seem like they are miraculous and rare? ![]()
I think I will stick to this message board for all my questions--you all make me feel much better. ![]()
My last FSH was 7.5 (10 mos ago). I am 40 yrs old. I have secondary infertility and have been TTC for <gulp> 2 yrs 9 months. I do not drink or smoke and have no medical issues except for being overweight. According to my charts I am ovulating.
Does anyone think I will be prescribed any meds?
Re: I should not be googling today...can you answer a question?
I think they are going to want to look at your husband's sperm analysis before prescribing anything.
If they do recommend IUIs, then I would suspect they would start with Clomid and an Ovidrel trigger. Thankfully Clomid is cheap - $9 at WalMart.
My best guess:
They will probably wait to see what your DH's SA reveals before treating you with any meds. (If they find there is no sperm, all the meds in the world will not get you KU.)
If they find sperm, they'll probably start with "super-ovulation" and put you on Clomid with an Ovidrel trigger for a few cycles. This will give you a stronger ovulation with more than 1 follicle for the sperm to aim at. You can choose to do TI or IUI.
TTC since 10/2010
IUIs # 1-5 = BFFN
IVF # 1(July 2012) = BFN
IVF # 2 (November 2012) = BFP (MIssed MC D&C @ 8w3d on 1/10/13)
The full diagnostic workup will probably include seeing how you respond to clomid.
The RE will suggest a course of action. That's what they do. Just remember, you don't have to agree to anything you don't want to.
RE: the 40 year old thing - Me too, WTF? 50% of couples where the woman is 40 can have children naturally and it's something like 70% where the women is in her mid to late 30s. And many more can get pregnant with a little help. Really not at all unusual.
Ooh thanks for the tip!
Thanks for your answer! I was kind of hoping for that kind of scenario..just something to give my TI a little boost.
This is exactly what I was thinking..
And thanks for your post. Good info!
Step away from the Google.
Go directly to TTC > 35. Do not pass Google. Do not collect 200 bytes of internet information.
(And keep us informed about what happens!)
<br /> My Ovulation Chart</a>
This. I have a friend that often has to be reminded that she does not have a brain tumor no matter what Google may say.
OP: I agree with everyone else, they will not do anything until you get the SA results. I skiped Clomid and went straight to IUI. One of my friends skiped both and went straight to IVF. It will depend on your unique situation.
Ha Ha yes I need to listen to this..
I called my RE office today to see if there were any cancellations for 5/25 which is the day I wanted originally and there was! WOO HOO! So now I just need to have AF arrive** on 5/23 so I can get my 3 day blood tests (which I am assuming I will need to get) at the same time as my appt. Come on Universe--throw me a bone!
**Of course I am totally open to AF NOT arriving--I would love one of those miraculous and rare 40 yr old pregnancies to just happen this month because my body and mind are so stress free since I have set up an RE appt...just sayin'.
Llama: being a 40+ woman, and like you overweight, non-smoker, non- drinker the statistics are SO discouraging. You think the stats are bad at 40 try looking at the stats for IVF over 40......that is where I am at right now.......as others have said walk away from the google.
Like others have said B/W and analysis', then probably clomid TI, clomidIUI, then injectable IUI and then IVF. All the RE's are so different in the apporaches they take, your RE may suggest CoQ10, dhea, or other "vitamin" type supplements.
I wish you luck with the next step in your journey.

Haha, My OB believed in blind luck and told me to make an appt with an RE "because then I'll get knocked up before the appointment". Sadly that didn't happen. But you never know Llama!

Might be miraculous and rare, but it happened to me. Got my BFP with DS at 40 on the exact same day I was going to order my meds for my IVF cycle.
Totally important to keep this is mind. I have many friends & aquintances that have gotten KU 40 and over w/out fertility treatments or an RE or anything. And I would have to imagine some of them have high fsh, low amh ect and just don't know it! I'm being proactive about ttc because it's a priority for me and this is the right path for me to follow at this time and that's why I'm on this board! I think theres more info about the difficulties on the internet because women that are having trouble ttc are more likely to be on the internet looking for info!
Me 41 DH 46 Not actively ttc, surprise BFP on 1/6/11! 4/1/11 m/c our sunshine at 16wks after complications from CVS test. TTC #2 **5th cycle 12/6/11 BFP! Missed m/c at 9 weeks 1/21/12, trisomy 14. Two Chemical PG 3/12&7/12

Suddenly I feel a huge desire to order some meds...
Thanks for adding a little bit of hope.
I bought meds that I can't use for months. Hmm...
Glad you got int earlier, and hope that if AF is going to show, she shows with good timing this month.
I think the RE will want your H's SA, and to run a whole lot of blood tests on you before he even discusses prescribing things. Good luck!
