Does your SO/DH do this?

So I'm a little peeved currently, more at myself than anything for forgetting to bring this item back to the store and get a new container of similac. So I have to go back later on this week...grr.

Last week I went to Target and compared the prices on Similac vs The Target version of Similac. They were virtually the same, minus the binding agents, as others on here have said. Of course, for a container a few ounces bigger than the Similac was only $15, and one that was over twice as big was only $21 (less than the original price on the container of Similac- regularly $24). So I figured eh-- maybe risk the $15 and try it and if it doesn't sit well with LO we won't use it (and I may even be able to call corporate and get my money back). So I bought one container, showed DH the price difference, and explained that I looked at the nutrition aspect of it was the same. He got pissed and said that I was skimping on LO, etc. I said that there is a difference between skimping and being smart, spending less money on virtually the same thing. When LO was a NB I would have said the same thing he did, but now that we are moving onto solids and he isn't having any sort of reaction to it (knock on wood) I guess I am less sensitive about it and more realistic. Now I know DH has a short fuse at times, but has anyone else gotten this reaction over this type of issue? I agreed to take it back (though like I mentioned, I forgot today), but it's just annoying.

Re: Does your SO/DH do this?

  • No my SO does not care at all, but I do it to myself. I bought Target brand baby wipes today and although I know it doesnt matter, I can't help but feel cheap and I feel guilty.

Then I give myself a reality check and tell myself that I am an awesome mom and that buying off brand stuff when possible is not cheap, it is smart.

  • Did you know that in some cases a name brand product will be made and put into the off-brand packaging? It happens often, and might be the same for formula (though I haven't looked into it). We used the Costco brand of formula for my DD, and we never had any problems. Neither did she.

My DH would be happy to save money where we can, like me. Sorry, I'm no help for that.

  • We use the Target brand formula now. DH is totally okay with it. We both researched the matter & decided it would be fine to try out.

I don't look at it as skimping on LO, I see it as smart spending. But I also don't have a problem buying some store brand food items for DH & I either.

The way I see it-as long as my DS is happy & healthy & getting the nutrients he needs, it shouldn't matter if he is on a store brand vs name brand of formula. Our pedi didn't have a problem with it either.

  • We have just started supplementing, and honestly, after we went through our samples I knew there was no way I was sticking with name brand. It is ridiculous...some of them are upwards of $30!!! I got our local grocery store brand (Hannaford) instead of the Enfamil and it was $14.

IMHO, I think the population is too consumed with brands. If the formula wasn't safe, they wouldn't sell it. If it is bad for your LO, you'll know when they have a bad reaction. I think it is silly to buy a brand just for a brand.

THIS!  Seriously, I think nothing of brands...I go buy what it tastes like, whether it's healthy, etc.  Real important things.  If DH accused me of trying to skimp when it came to our kid, I'd 'skimp' him right on the @$$.  What about generic antibiotics???  Name brand does not necessarily mean better.  There are tons of things we like better that are store brand.

  • i have only used the target brand formula from day 1. i also only use store-brand wipes. do whatever you're comfortable with.

OR you could put the target brand formula into the similac container and your DH will never know the difference!

This. We use Target soy because we couldn't stomach paying $26 a can for Prosobee. He has done great on it and it has saved us a bundle. I don't feel guilty, because as long as DS is happy and well fed, then I'm happy.

DH and I both agreed upon it, so I don't have this happen to me.

  • My DH is a huge "name brand snob". I'd buy the cheaper stuff and put it in the name brand container. ;)

  • I've always been a generic girl as I can't fathom paying more for essentially the same product. When DH and I met he was buying all of the name brands without even looking at prices, and it irked me to no end. Now he actually compares prices and buys what makes sense.

I really don't get people who have to have a certain name brand...it feels like you are just throwing money away for no reason.

  • No, my DH doesn't do this.  Rather he kind of does the opposite which is currently driving me up a wall.  He has no opinion on most issues around the house.  If we were deciding on a brand of formula, he wouldn't care one bit what kind it was.  It would be up to me.  I'm the one that does the budget, meal planning, coupon clipping and research on anything baby related including how to do solids, what kind of diapers to buy, what kind of high chair to get, how to do potty training.  So, I would probably do a bunch of reading about generic v. name brand, do some price shopping with coupons and make a decision and then be very grumpy about all the time I spent on it, but DH wouldn't likely have a problem with whatever I decided.

BTW, I would be very careful with the "if it weren't safe they wouldn't sell it" argument because that simply isn't true.

Ok, what formula is on the market that is dangerous? The latest recall I heard was a name brand formula. Yes, sometimes things are discovered after the fact and things are recalled. It could happen with a brand or a no name. But my point is that it's not like they put rusty nails in the generic.

That wasn't a specific to formula reference, it was a just in general reference.  I haven't really been tracking formula recalls since we don't use it.  I was just saying that just because they sell it doesn't automatically make it safe

  • My DH could care less.  I do all of the research and decisions on this stuff.  He's happy when I save any money.
