Pregnant after a Loss

No Weight Gain - Week 24 & Your Experience with a Marginal Placenta?

Hi All, I have not gained any weight in 2 weeks since my last doc appt. I still feel my LO kicking, so I feel like everything is ok, but I was told at my A/S that I have a marginal placenta (Doc told me the umbilical cord inserted off center and near the side of the placenta instead of in the middle). They said they are not worried, but will do a growth ultra sound at 32 weeks to check on LO! I feel like my bump is getting bigger, but no weight gain? I felt like for having some extra weight before baby, that I was gaining TOO much during the first 20 weeks. I feel like where I am at now is a good weight for 24 weeks, but still concerned no increase on the scale!! (On a side note, we have been busy with family and I haven't been able to get on here, so it it great to be back and see everyone posting!!)

Re: No Weight Gain - Week 24 & Your Experience with a Marginal Placenta?

  • I don't think I would be concerned if the lack of gain has only been over the last two weeks. I had several instances like that with DS. I think as long as the doctor thinks you're on track in regards to weight, you're probbaly fine.  In my 2nd trimester with my son, I actually lost a few lbs and never gained until the end of the 2nd trimester and they were never concerned. But I also think that if you're worried about it, you should talk to your doctor about it just to give you some peace of mind.

  • Weight gain can fluctuate from time to time and probably has to do with whether you're retaining more/less water as well. If your doctor isn't worry, you don't need ot worry.  With my 1st DD, I didn't gain any weight or start showing at all until after 24 weeks.  With this one, I started showing much earlier, but my weight gain has been almost identical.

As for the marginal placenta, I didn't have 'marginal', but had 'low-lying' placenta and it got me all freaked out at first. I read all kinds of different things online, which probably made it worse.  As it turned out, it was very common, nothing to worry about, and at my 30 week ultrasound, we found that it had moved up on it's own just as the doctor had predicted.  Soo...again, I know it's hard, but if you're doctor isn't worried than try not to be.

    Good luck!

  • I can't speak to the marginal placenta but can say that in all of my pregnancies I hadn't gained any weight at all by 24 weeks.  And, in my second pregnancy, I actually weighed LESS when I gave birth than when I got pregnant (and yet I had an 8lb 9oz baby).  Everyone's body reacts to pregnancy different and women gain at all different rates.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

I was diagnosed with the marginal cord insertion at 19 weeks. The cord was really close to the tip of the placenta. We had a growth ultrasound two weeks ago at 29 weeks and the cord is now moving toward the middle as the placenta grows. I am hoping this happens for you also! As long as your Doctor is not concerned with the weight gain, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I know so easier said than done. I didn't gain until 29 weeks, at that point I found the 7 lbs I lost in the first and second tri and then 5 more lbs.

  • I had marginal cord insertion (a/k/a battledore placenta) with DD. We didn't know about it until I gave birth and they looked at the placenta. She was perfectly healthy.
