bedsharing bedtime routine?

LO is 5 weeks old today. We are bed sharing with a sidecar bassinet. He does some of the night in the bassinet but mostly in bed with us. Right now we bring him to bed already asleep and we all go to bed at the same time (between 10-11pm). How do you incorporate a bedtime routine with bedsharing (story time, etc.)? What is your bedtime routine? I love this snuggly little guy next to me but am also looking forward to some adult time with DH...when we can put the little guy to bed and still have some time (awake) together....thoughts?

We start to get DD ready around 8 pm: DH undresses her and changes her diaper while I wet a rag to wash her face, gums and hands. Then DH plays with her while I get ready for bed. Then I turn some music on, get into bed and DH puts her in bed. We nurse to sleep and she usually falls asleep if she's sleepy (lately it's most often not!). Sometimes DH hangs out & we watch tv. Sometimes we're able to spend alone time if I sneak off the bed but I usually just go to bed when she does and Bump or watch tv.

  • Have you tried letting hin sleep in the side car by himself? Both my kids would go to sleep early, like 6pm, so I'd nurse them down amd they'd sleep in their crib or on our bed. We just keep a monitor close by to listen in.

Around 3.5 months DS2 started going to bed around 7.  So I got out DS1's toddler mattress on the floor and nursing him to sleep.  He rolls over so don't feel safe leaving him in the bed.  He usually wakes up around 9-10 and then I bring him to bed and nurse back to sleep.

DS is 9 months and I am still going to bed with him at night. When he was younger (2-3 months) I could put him in the bassinet next to the bed for his first stretch of sleep while I stayed up, but around 4-5 months he would no longer stay sleeping unless I was with him. Thus, I usually go to bed with him... or I hold him while he sleeps and I stay up and watch TV with DH in the livingroom for a bit.

Now that he is mobile it is a whole new challange. Even if I can get him to sleep in our bed and then sneak away, I am afraid that he will crawl off the side of the bed, so I continue to go to bed with him. Occasionaly I leave him sleep, and keep the monitor on really high, so I can go check on him whenever I hear the slightest russle to make sure he isn't crawling off the bed (our bedroom and living area is on the same level).

I love bedsharing, but this is the only part that isn't working for us. I feel like we can never have friends over, because I can't just put the baby down for the night. I have tried putting him in his crib for his first stretch of sleep, or even the PnP that is sidecared to our bed, and he freaks out, even if I am there to sooth him.
