High-Risk Pregnancy

I am off all blood thinners- and a worried mess

I smiled ear-to-ear when I was told I could stop my 2x daily heparin shots at 26 wks. Then, I was like- oh gawd! I was really nervous about clots. Especially any that could effect the baby. (I was taking it for low protein S)

I was told to continue taking baby aspirin which I did. I stopped taking it at 36 wks like I was supposed to, but now Im really nervous again! I understand the thought that bleeding too much is way more likely than a clot, but dang. I miss my aspirin.

Ive already talked to my doctor about my concerns, and he went through his doctorly spiel about risk vs benefits (which I totally understand). I still freak out anytime any body-part falls asleep. Any words of encouragement?

  • Sorry you're nervous! I'm sure your doc knows what's best! What did your doc say was the risk with continuing to take baby aspirin? I was tested several weeks ago and OB found my protein s was low...(I was 37 and low end for a 1st tri woman is 57) hematologist is retesting me because he doesn't believe it's a "true" deficiency. How were you diagnosed? I'm (obviously) not on anything and I'm freaking out because I'm waiting to hear if I should be!

  • He is worried that I will bleed too much. He always says "aspirin poisons your platelets for a whole week" so thats why he wants me off early.

]Mine was at a 35 in the first tri. I got tested because I had an episode that looked like a ministroke. They ran all the the clotting tests on me and found that. It ended up being dx a migraine but they also found a small hole in my heart, so they were being extra cautious. I was started on the baby aspirin regimen immediately.

Mr dr asked his dr buddies their opinion on whether I should be doing heparin shots and got differing answers so we went with better safe than sorry. When my little guy wouldnt cooperate with the u/s techs to check his heart, I was sent to MFM. They said it wasnt low enough for heparin shots and my doctor decided to take me off. So I guess it depends on your doctor.

Good luck! I know the waiting game is awful.

  • That's interesting...I would lean towards better safe than sorry, too. However, I think the hemotologist is (at this point) thinking no heparin OR baby aspirin. I guess we'll see what the new labs say at my appointment on Tuesday. Thanks for sharing your story! Good luck to you, too!

  • There are still things you can do to help prevent blood clots - make sure you are not sitting still (with legs down, like in a car or at a desk) for longer than an hour, stay very well hydrated, and wear compression hose!  You can buy the light compression hose in most pharmacies, but I would also see if your doctor would write you a prescription for a heavier (tighter) pair, and then your insurance will pay a portion of the cost!

    Good luck to you!
