Question for Homebirth Mamas

I'm 31 weeks and am in the process of filling out my LOA paperwork.  I just found out from another pregnant coworker that we can file for short-term disability, in addition to our unpaid FMLA.  I was unaware of this and very excited to hear.  However, now I'm wondering whether or not I will qualify, as I'm having a homebirth.  I know how insurance companies can be, and even though my vagina will be stretching as much as hers, I'm worried that my claim will be denied.  I'm delivering with a Direct Entry Midwive (DEM), not a Nurse-Midwife.  She is not in practice with any docs, and I am not receiving concurrent care with an OB/GYN.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this situation?  Were you able or unable to get these benefits?  I'm so tired of having to climb uphill with big business and the gov't in order to make my own decisions regarding health!

  • is it something you can talk to your insurance company about beforhand? 

    Also, the natural birth board might have someone who knows.

  • I mostly lurk, but MH and I just had an interview with a potential midwife practice last night, it's on my mind. 

    When asking about insurance, our (and most) insurances where we live will cover or reimburse a homebirth, but only if it is attended by a Certified Nurse Midwife. In North Carolina (where we live) only CNMs can practice legally. CPM and Direct Entry are illegal and therefore will not be paid for by the insurance. 

    I'd try looking up the midwifery laws in your state and also calling your insurance company.

  • I had a homebirth and received 6 weeks of maternity/short-term disability leave in addition to the FMLA. But these had nothing to do with my insurance (which did cover my homebirth, my DEM was in-network). I don't know how it works in your state but my paid and unpaid leave was only a work matter, insurance doesn't care how much time I had off as long as I was covered. I would talk to your HR/payroll dept.
