My mother got a crib from someone at church. I should have put it together a long time ago, but I procrastinated. This weekend, I put it together and noticed it was drop side. Ok, not a big deal for me. Then I see it's not the kind that locks into place. Bump it too hard, and the side drops. That's fixable. Bolt the thing. Next, I do something I should have from the get go, and do the finger test. I can fit three of my double in sized man fingers between the rails. My daughter can fit 4!!! THAT is not an option. Finally, we put the crib mattress in and it fails the 2 finger test. WTH? This crib isn't new, but it's far from old. There's NO WAY it could have passed US standards set in 1974! Did they special order from somewhere overseas or something?! I can't even in good faith donate it with a giant sign that says NOT FOR USE WITH INFANT. Have no idea what to with it.
I call my mom, hormonal, and she tells me we'll have my dad look at it when he gets back from Cali. My mom gets back yesterday, takes one look at it, and goes, "Yeah, we have to find you a new one."
Anyway, now I've got to drop an unexpected 200-300 on a crib, and FAST. Grrrrr!!! My own fault. I should have done it months ago.
Re: Crib Disaster
If your fine with a second hand crib, I'd check out some of the consignment stores in the area. Most of the ones I've been in have a few cribs for sale. Or you can look on Craigslist for option. It stinks the crib you got isn't safe for use. var fctb_tool=null; function pObB_U2o1a1t(t) { fctb_tool=t; start(fctb_tool); }
Money was tight with us but I really wanted a new crib for LO. I recommend the Graco cribs. We got the Sarah for $175 at Sears in Canada but I was also looking at ordering from the states so I know they have it at Walmart. This crib was easy to put together and meets all the current standards. We got ours in Cherry but it does come in many colours.

Another cheap option is to get one from Amazon. Make a baby registry with a crib and you'll get a 10% completion coupon. It's good for one use only but you'll get it right away since your due date is less than 30 days away. Pick one with free super saver shipping and you can get a new crib pretty cheap, without having to leave the house.
Amazon has the Graco Sarah a PP mentioned for $141.37 in Cinnamon, which would be $127.23 with the discount.
I have Prime, so that's not a bad idea. 2nd day delivery is free. The closest IKEA is 150 miles in either direction.
My DH has prime too, and that's how we got this LO's crib. It was nice to have it delivered right to the house and not pay an arm and a leg for it.
This. We ordered ours from Amazon and got it in less than 2 weeks. If you decide to go the Walmart route, it has free site to store shipping that takes about a week and then you just go pick it up from your local store. GL!
Then came a miscarriage March '11
Then came a baby in the baby carriage May 16, 12
Waiting on our second little peanut!
What a bummer... I'm so sorry you have to go through this!!
If it makes you feel better, Walmart has some really great looking and affordable cribs, and they ship FAST. (At least mine did.) I got the Olivia, but considered the Modena (only $199). They have free shipping to store, if you have someone with a vehicle large enough to pick it up.
Good luck!
Lurking here...
Your amazon registry needs to active for 14days before they give you the 10%, so I don't think it will work.
