People Suck - Vent

My Aunt got an infection in the 80's that nearly killed her and left her with brain damage.  She does ok, but she gets confused about things sometimes.  She'll call my Mom and my Mom will have to convince her that she didn't drink bleach when she walked by it, for instance.  This afternoon she fell for a credit card scam.  Someone called and said she had entered an internet survey and had won.  She doesn't get on the internet, and she hadn't entered a survey.  But all she had to do to collect a prize was give them her credit card number so that they could charge two dollars on it.  They even gave her a phone number so that she could confirm that they were legitimate.  Needless to say, my Mom is now trying to get her to call her credit card company to cancel the card.  We're just hoping she didn't give them any other information.  I think people who take advantage of the elderly or disabled should be beaten about the head and shoulders.  Urrrrgh!

    How awful! I hope that your mom is able to stop things before they take her for too much, and that the horrible people behind this get caught. Have you reported it to the authorities?

    The good news most credit card companies have policies in place where if scams are caught/reported within 12hrs the card holder is only liable for so much, within 24hrs a bit more etc etc. 

    Also - people suck.

    I'm so sorry!  I'm dealing with someone who keeps getting ahold of my new credit card numbers (twice in one month!), so I know how messy it is.  And I consider myself quite savy in that area, so I can only imagine what a mess it is when helping someone you know can't help themselves.  Thoughts for your aunt, and what a blessing that your mother is available to help her!!

    I don't know, my Mom just called me about it.  I'm sure that my Aunt still probably has the numbers that were used (though honestly, I'm not sure if that's any help) but it should be reported so that they can't try it on anyone else in the area.

    Omg, that's sick! I'm so sorry your aunt has to deal with people taking advantage of her.  My mom's bf's son is the same age as me and has a lot of mental issues.  I feel like it is a full time job for my mom's bf to watch over things, bc he is so easily taken advantage of.  It's too bad there are sick people in this world and I hope your mom can clear things up:)

    OH that's so sad.  Sorry that happened but I hope your mom can help clear it up and cancel the card.  One of my old co-workers wife fell for this scam except she gave everything out including the PIN to their bank account and it was a mess to clean up.

    Well, my Mom updated me and my Aunt called the credit card company.  Instead of canceling the card though, they're going to flag it so they'll watch it for activity.  I would have thought they'd just want to cancel it outright, but at least she shouldn't be liable for any of the charges since she notified them pretty quickly.  Makes me mad, but at least she's getting help.  You just can't be too careful.

    Man that is not nice at all.  My great aunt Geneva was like that.  She once invited a couple into her home that said they needed to use the phone because their car broke down.  Being the sweet, southern lady that she is, invited them in.  Not only did they take all her money, but the bastards took her tea cozy that belonged to her mother.  WHO THE HELL STEALS AN OLD LADY'S TEA COZY?!
