How off was the weight estimate of your baby?

I just got back from my appointment and they did an estimation during my bpp sono and are estimating that she is 8lbs 10oz!!! Luckily I am not going to my full 40 weeks, I am being induced next Thursday.     I am hoping you ladies tell me that I should not be concerned because these things are wrong sometimes.  I know about the 1lb difference but I would like to hear your story.....

Re: How off was the weight estimate of your baby?

  • I had a growth ultrasound on the Tuesday before I delivered on that Thursday. The estimate was 7 lbs 6 oz, and he came in at 6 lbs 12 oz.

  • I was told by Maternal Fetal Medicine that it's not a 1 pound error margin, it's a 10% error margin. So the bigger your baby gets, the more inaccurate it becomes.

  • I am hoping (for the opposite reason) that mine are off. My grown ultrasounds show baby still at 4lb 12 oz!! I have another one this week. They told me 20% margin of error.

  • I had an u/s on a Monday before because of too much fluid and they said the baby was AT LEAST 8 lbs, 2 oz.

He arrived two days later weighing in at 7 lbs, 1.5 oz.

So just a about a lb less than they said.

Our u/s was overestimated by a little more than 1 pound, so don't worry! :)

DD was estimated to be 9lbs via an ultrasound at 40 weeks. I had her 2 days later and she weighed 9 lbs 6 oz....sorry I know that's not what you want to hear! This was also with my dr. Insisting that the ultrasound was way off and there was no way she was bigger than 8 lbs.

  • DD was estimated at 10lbs, and was born a week later at 7lbs14oz. Note, the was by feeling around. A scan two days before I delivered had her at 8-9lbs.
  • At my growth ultrasound at 34w3d they estimated he was 6lbs 4 oz. When I delivered at 36w4d he was 7 lbs 15 oz.

  • At 41 weeks I had an u/s estimate 9 lbs, 3 oz.  DD was born the next day at 9 lbs 11 oz.  So it was actually 1/2 lb low.
  • When they estimated my DS at 34 weeks they thought he was already 7 1/2 lbs!! I was freaking out! Then right before he was born when I was in the hospital they estimated him at 8 lbs 2 oz. He was only actually 7lbs 1 oz! So they were over a pound off! I wouldn't worry about it too much, they really aren't all that accurate! And even if it is accurate for you, there isn't anything you can do about so there is no need to worry, everything will work out :)

  • They estimated DS at 7.5. He was 9.9.

  • I had a growth u/s the day DS was born. He measured 6lbs15oz on the u/s but was only 6lbs5oz at birth.

  • My last growth u/s was at 34 weeks and they estimated him to be in the 7lb range at birth.  He was 8lbs 2 oz when born at 39 weeks 2 days.  Before I went in for my c/s the doctor felt my tummy for baby's position and thought he would be in the 6lb range but sure enough he was bigger!

  • I had a growth u/s at 38 weeks and it estimated 5 lbs 14 oz.  I was induced b/c of his smaller size a few days later and LO came out at 6 lbs 10 oz.

true. Larger baby gets the harder it is to measure correctly and its all based on a 'generalized' formula in the machine so its an averages thing.

  • At 37 weeks, an U/S said DS was a 7 pounder. I had him at 38 weeks and he was 9 lbs 6.5 oz.  They were a little off...

These stories make me nervous since LO has been measuring big all along and I was told he/she was already just over 8lbs 2 weeks ago.  Indifferent

  • I just had DS yesterday and they had been telling me that he wa going to be a large baby, which we figured with the track record on both sides of our families. They estimated he would be ATLEAST 9 lbs and he was born yesterday at 8lb 5oz. So close but still a little off.

  • With DS, I had an u/s 5 days before I had him. I think they said something like 7 lbs 8 oz, with a lb difference +/-. All along my OB said he was measuring behind small so I thought the possibility of a 8 1/2 lb baby was ridiculous. Sure enough, he was 5 lbs 15 oz but 20 inches. I think his length and large head size contributed to the scan being so far off.

I am getting monthly growth scans with DD and today they estimated her at 6 lbs 10 oz. I can tell that she is very long, her feet alone are very long. Also, he head looks big like DS' did. I am very anxiously waiting to see how right/wrong they are.
