Natural Birth

umibilical cord clamping

I was just doing some research on cutting the umibilical cord right after birth..after researching, I plan on leaving the cord attached until it stops pulsing (5-15 mins) so the baby can get all that it needs out of the placenta and the cord. I was curious if I could still breastfeed during this time? I have read that it is highly recommended to have both skin to skin contact and breast feed immediately. Does anyone know if I can feed while the cord is still attached.

Really liked this article/blog about delaying cord clamping https://www.marinalternativemothersgroup.com/search/label/Delayed%20Cord%20Clamping

  • That is awesome! I'm glad that you found a doctor like that! I wish there was more like him!

  • Just thought I would throw it out there that even after the cord stopped pulsating and was cut my lil man had no interest in latching right away. Every baby is different. We didn't get a good bfing session for about five hours but he nurses like crazy now. 15 minutes would do no harm.

Good point. I agree with you...This is my first so I wont really know what I am doing, lol. But, as long as there is no restriction or reason why I couldn't try feeding her/him while the cord is attached then I plan on giving it a try. Thanks for the insight!

  • I am planning on doing the same thing. Idk if the link told you this but if your child develops jaundice from DCC if you take him/her out into natural sunlight it will help...otherwise you can also use the (can't think of the name) lights they have for babies with jaundice.

It's called bili lights. I'm going to have to read that article when I'm done nursing LO. We just got home from a 2 night stay in the NICU for a bad case of jaundice. We delayed cord clamping, and OP I'm pretty sure we started BFing before the cord was cut. LO did have a long cord, they said, and I remember thinking it was a really long time before they had DH cut it (and it was not clamped until then).

I don't see why you can't as long as the cord is long enough (some babies have short cords and baby might not be able to reach the breast if your placenta is still inside).

My OB told me today that waiting until it stops pulsing is his standard procedure, which is awesome.

I really think this is more the standard these days. You can at least hold the baby as close to your breasts as possible so they can begin to smell the colostrum. They'll root, but not necessarily latch right away.
