Cervidil & induction?

My doctor has scheduled me for induction a week from today.  As my cervix is currently closed, he says we will need to use Cervidil to prep my cervix for labor, which could take up to a couple of days to work.  I have been researching Cervidil and it says that it may not be safe to BF after using this.  Have any of you women used Cervidil during induction?  If so, how long did it take to work and were you able to BF your baby after use?  TIA!

Re: Cervidil & induction?

  • I have no experience with Cervidil, but I have never heard of not being able to BF after usage.  Here is the FDA drug fact sheet for Cervidil, and while I basically skimmed it, I saw nothing about not being able to BF afterwards.  HTH!

  • I was induced with my first and they used Cervadil. They put it in for 12 hours and after that they started Pitocin. From start to finish my induction was close to 24 hours.

They never said anything about not being able to BF afterwards.

  • I have never heard of that. I had 2 rounds of Cervidil with my first, and breastfeeding was just fine.

  • I had cervidil with my first (at 41 weeks) and never needed to use the pitocin. The whole point of cervidil is to soften and dilate the cervix. For me, once that was done, my body took over. My water broke by itself and DD was in my arms 2 hours later. The whole induction took just about 7 hours. I know this isn't a common thing but it's what worked for me. Good luck to you!
