Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When did you start stage 2 foods, etc?

OK, silly first time Mom here...

We are currently doing the 1st foods and he is doing great, has been since 4.5 months.  LOVES food of all kinds...

At what point do you move them up to the 2nd foods?  The only difference I can see is the containers/jars are bigger and they mix fruits (apples and cherries)...

Our 6 month appt isnt for 2 weeks because we got off schedule due to an ear infection, and I plan on discussing this with his Dr but would like to know what you are doing in the real world...

What are your little ones eating at each sitting?

Re: When did you start stage 2 foods, etc?

  • My DD just turned 6 months yesterday. We actually started introducing 2nd foods about 2 weeks ago. She loves them all. I started with the ones that included mixed foods of things she already had, i.e. pears and carrots, apples and butternut squash, etc. I only did fruits and veggies, and haven't started with anything with meat in it... I'll do that next. We are also doing a combo of BLW and purees, so she's started to get chunks of real food, again, foods she already has eaten, bananas, pears, carrots, sweet potato, etc.

  • My daughter is 7months old and we just started stage 2 foods Monday. After her 6mo apt the Dr. said she could start having puffs. We are slowly doing the puffs as she still hasn't gotten the hang of it. If you read the package of stage2 foods (by Gerber at least) you will see the recommended guidelines for these foods. The package says "Your child may be ready if he or she: sits independently, shows excitement when food is presented." I think stage1 foods say something like your child bay be ready if he or she sits with support, leans towards spoon with mouth open.
  • I never did the jars, but I've been giving DS finger foods since he started solids and once I cleared him for allergies on different foods, I started combining them.

ETA: We started solids at around 6m.

  • At out 6 month appt (it was actually a week before the 6month mark) pedi told us we could start stage 2. I make LOs food and I had already started making it thicker and would mix things he already had. Also he eats about 2 oz twice a day.

  • Oh ya, I have read the guildlines but it just seems like a LOT of food in the stage 2's...I think  he is ready activity wise...eager towards food, sits independantly, etc.

We don't do jars a lot but when I have I just give him half a jar(they're usually 4 oz and LO eats 2 oz a meal) and the next day he gets the other half. He's already eating solids with no problems so he should be fine. If he doesn't like the thickness of it he'll probably gag, spit it out, not want it, etc., then maybe you can just thin it out with milk/formula(so it doesn't go to waste) then try again in a week. He already knows the concept of eating so you shouldn't worry too much :]

  • How much and how often are you feeding "solids"?

Currently he gets a bottle for breakfast with me at home, then at daycare he gets 3tablespoons oatmeal with half a tub/jar the the first foods fruit with a bottle.  Lunch he gets a full tub of veg with a bottle.  And for snack he gets half a tub of fruit and 3 tablespoons cereal...of course with bottles in between.

I feed him dinner at 6, which is usually half a tub of veg a a bottle and then at 8 before bed he gets a full 5oz bottle.

I'm just thinking if I up the actual amount of "food" he will want less formula and I dont want him to get less nutrients than he needs.  I know everyone does something different.
