I noticed the post below where people were saying how the bump's list of best carriers probably wasn't the best choices. I am currently researching this to find out which one I should get to use with a newborn. I want to make sure I should get one that will be safe to use with my newborn and will be comfortable to use during the summer months (due at the end of June.) Can anyone recommend the best carrier I should get?
Re: Best Baby Carrier
I had DS June 1 and it was really hot. For that reason I opted not to get a Moby. I just used a French Twill Ring Sling from Sleeping Baby and it worked fantastically.
It wasn't a ton of fabric that I was really hot and by the time DS got too heavy to wear a lot he fit into a SSC (Beco)
I loved the bjorn for the early months. It's super easy to get baby in and out of and very comfortable to wear with lighter babies. I know it's like a cardinal sin to recommend that carrier because it allegedly causes hip dysplasia which is a total myth and there is no real science supporting that theory-- if it actually happened, don't you think they'd be getting sued for millions of dollars by tons of parents who have been using that carrier for 30 years now and we'd be hearing about it? For me, it worked wonderfully. It wouldn't be a carrier I'd wear my child in for 5 straight hours in though, but it worked well for my babywearing needs (using for 20 minute intervals on walks/grocery store trips/zoo trips).
For an older baby (4+ months) I'd recommend the ergo.
I'd recommend getting both of these products at consignment stores used.
I have no problem that people like the Bjorn, but please check your facts before you say that there is no science behind it. I'm sorry that you don't want to hear that it isn't recommended, but there is no need to get angry and go on the attack.
This is from hipdysplasia.org
https://www.hipdysplasia.org/Developmental-Dysplasia-Of-The-Hip/Prevention/Baby-Carriers-Seats-and-Other-Equipment/Default.aspx
"The most unhealthy position for the hips during infancy is when the legs are held in extension with the hips and knees straight and the legs brought together, which is the opposite of the fetal position. The risk to the hips is greater when this unhealthy position is maintained for a long time."
It then shows a picture of the type of carriers not recommended, which is exactly how the Bjorn works.
Quote everything else that site says--
"Some types of baby carriers and other equipment may interfere with healthy hip positioning. Such devices include but are not limited to baby carriers, slings, wraps, pouches, car seats, exercisers, rockers, jumpers, swings, bouncers and walkers, and moulded seating items. These devices could inadvertently place hips in an unhealthy position, especially when used for extended periods of time"
I'm sure most moms today use some of these products. Maybe even multiple ones.
The key words here is used for extended periods of time. No one doubts that if you leave your kid in a bjorn or an exersaucer for 5 hours a day consecutively it could cause harm. Using these products the appropriate way should be encouraged (which I clearly did in my first post), not saying you need to avoid every product on that list.
If there's a study out there that shows that bjorn/carriers that are similar cause hip dysplasia I'll eat my words. They said it *can* put hips in an unhealthy position, not that it causes hip dysplasia. It also says they don't specifically recommend/tell you not to use a particular brand of carrier because there is no solid, concrete proof these products cause harm.
