Calling all Reflux Mommies!

Hi Ladies!

I've been thinking a lot lately about what my next move with DS is, sleeping wise.

He's currently sleeping in his Fischer Price RNP. That has worked like a charm ever since day 3 of having him home.

I know it's getting closer and closer to the time when he is going to outgrow his RNP. My question is, what is the next transition? We have a PNP, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out how we would make it more upright.

I thought about getting a Tucker Sling for his credit mattress. Has anyone had a Tucker Sling? I wasn't going to get the wedge, just the sling.

Thoughts? Advice? Help!!

And, at what age were your LO's finally able to sleep like a "normal" person? :)

TIA!

  • We were able to transition DS to the crib at 8 weeks, but he was rocked completely to sleep until practically 6 months to avoid him getting upset and spitting up everywhere.

  • DD slept in the PNP on one of those wedge/sleep positioner things. I'm not sure how 'safe' those things technically are, but she came home from the NICU on a heart rate monitor so she had a built-in alarm system:)

  • DD slept in her crib, with 2 giant phone books under the two end legs to give her some incline.

  • We kept our girls in the RNP too long (past 6 months) because we were also not sure what to do. We ended up just transitioning directly into the cribs to see if they could do it before we tried any prop/wedges etc. and they were totally fine with laying flat on the crib mattress. They grew out of the reflux at 9-10 months enough that we could drop the medications. Best of luck...reflux sucks!!!

  • DS was in the PNP with books under one side of the legs to keep him elevated until he was 4 months, then moved him to the crib and did the same thing with putting a couple thick books under the legs of one side.

  • DS had severe reflux until about 9 mos old.  We first tried tulting his crib matress with a wedge, the he slept in his crib in his car seat for a while, then we moved on to the nap nanny and that did the trick for him.  I know that there are warnings about having a child sleep in it overnight (mother of the year here), but we had to do what was best for DS.  He was in it until right wbout 8 mos and then into his crib.

We had him on prevacid until about 15 mos.

  • DS slept in his bouncer in the crib until he was about 6 months old.  Then when we sleep trained he started sleeping in the crib with a wedge under one end of the mattress to create an incline.  The wedge is still in there and I put him on his back on that end of the crib every night but he ends up on his belly on the opposite end now.  He seemed to have "grown out of it" around 7-8 months and never spits up anymore.

This is the wedge we used:

  • I used the tucker sling with DS.  It was my lifesaver.  DS had severe reflux (which I think was attributed to him being born a month early and being on a breathing machine for 5 days).  We bought it when he was about 10 weeks old after trying everything and the first night he slept for 6 hours.  He was about 10 months old when we tested out him sleeping without it and we never had any problems.

  • we just kept DD up for a half hour or so in her swing typically after eating before moving her to her crib. We tried putting a phone book in the crib to raise one end, but DD was a big mover, so when we'd get her in the morning her feet would be raised not her head!  We also switched to a rice cereal formula.  it was thicker and it helped her keep it down more.

  • E is only 11 weeks so she's still in the RNP, and I'm wondering the same thing about transitioning. I bought a crib wedge, but every time I put her in it to try out a nap she screams. She seems to like being on her back for changing, but not for sleeping and I dont know why that is. I'm just hoping that if I wait a few more weeks she'll suddenly decide she's OK with the crib with the wedge. I'm too scared to take her out of the RNP right now because I like being able to be right there if she spits up.

  • DS was diagnosed at 2.5 months w/reflux. He has been on Zantac since then. He probably had it before then but we attributed his symptoms to gas. DS has slept in the crib since day 1. We never made an incline for the crib. He rolls around a lot in his sleep, so making an incline made us nervous. WWE do sit him upright in his carseat or swing for 20 min or so after each feeding. That seems to help a lot. Good luck!

  • We put rolled-up towels under one end of the crib mattress to create an incline (our pedi suggested).

  • G has been sleeping in his crib since 3 weeks.  Once the reflux started acting up and he needed meds, we were directed to hold him upright for 30 min after eating.  It has been helping, but only if we get a burp out in that time frame.  We also have the Snuza Halo on him at night, which helps me feel better about him being flat.

  • Our daughters both slept in the RNP's until 3 months. One of our daughters had horrible reflux but it has since gotten a lot better. When we transitioned them to their cribs we swaddled them and then propped them with a rolled blanket so they were tilted slightly on their side. That way when she spit up it went to the side of her and we didn't have to stress about her choking or anything. Suprisingly, she barely spit up while sleeping though, thank god. :)
