C-sections

to VBAC or not to VBAC

Hi ladies,

I know this is the c-section message board, but I was wondering if anyone on here attempted a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarian).  I am due in 10 days and I really have to decide if I want to schedule a section next week or wait it out and try a VBAC.

My DS was breech so I had a section 20 months ago with him.  This new baby girl is measuring small and is head down.  Should I go for it?  The hospital I am having her at has about a 60% success rate for VBACs...

Anyone out there have any luck? I only know of one person that had a VBAC after a section.

Any advice or stories would be helpful!

 Thanks!

Re: to VBAC or not to VBAC

  • I don't have any advice but I'm due on May 30th and have a c-section scheduled for 40w6d (June 5th).   If I go into labor, awesome, I will try to VBAC, but if not, then I'll have a c-section at the latest date my doctor was comfortable letting me go.  (I had placenta issues the first time around so I'm not really into going past 41weeks either).  For me, I would feel like a quitter if I had a c-section before my due date just because I wanted to give it a try if possible.  I think I would regret just scheduling a repeat in advance of my due date and always wonder what if if I didn't.  Good luck with your decision.

  • Check out the VBAC board - there a lot of women there who have been successful.  For me, once I got a handle on the risks of both CS and VBAC the decision was easy, but I've had both a vaginal birth and a cs and I know first hand how much easier the vaginal birth was for me.  My advice, and my doctor's advice, is that absent some additional medical concern, a normal non-surgical birth is better for both mom and baby.  GL with your decision.
  • OP, it's your choice, but you sound like a great candidate for VBAC! I am trying for a VBAC this time, and hopefully he will decide to come soon Smile

Note the guidelines stated by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists: "Attempting a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is a safe and appropriate choice for most women who have had a prior cesarean delivery, including for some women who have had two previous cesareans,"

Definitely check out the VBAC board. The ladies there are very knowledgeable and would be of great help with any other questions that you may have! Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • I had a VBAC and have absolutely no regrets about it. My first son was OP, and wouldn't come out after many hours of pushing, so I ended up with an unplanned c/s. DS2 was a straightfoward vaginal birth - I had a second degree tear, but it was still a faster recovery than the c/s was.

One of my biggest reasons for a VBAC was if we wanted a third - I'm not comfortable with having three c/s, and I wanted to keep the option of having another open (though plenty of women have three c/s, just something to consider!).

Good luck deciding, you do sound like a good candidate, and a 60% VBAC rate isn't too bad, I think.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

This for me too.  I did a lot of research and looked at the statistics on my own before interviewing providers (though I was sold on VBAC because it was statistically safer in my case since I had no medical issues suggesting otherwise).  But it really is a personal decision.  Good luck with your decision and if you have any specific VBAC questions, you can feel free to ask on our board.  Plenty of people come by with questions or in need of support.

  • Thanks ladies... I didn't even notice a VBAC board.  I am going to go for it.  I know that it may not work out, but at least I can try.  I just hate knowing the fact that if I hit 41 weeks  I will have to have a section anyway when I could just schedule one for any day now..

Yes, but this way at least you get the chance to try and VBAC! You never know, it could go off without a hitch, and then you won't have to recover from unnecessary abdominal surgery!
