constipation...? (EBF baby)

I'm EPing and LO hasn't had any formula...I didn't think BF babies got constipated but my LO is 5 1/2 weeks and hasn't pooped for several days. the pediatrician told us to give him a 1/4 of a suppository, and that did the trick but he hasn't gone since again...the nurse also told us to give him baby prune juice but that makes me nervous giving an infant juice...everything I've read says it's for babies 6mo+...has anyone else had any experience with this? We are most likely switching doctors...we really don't like or doctor.

Re: constipation...? (EBF baby)

  • DD was constipated last week. The doctor, who I trust and is amazing, told me to mix 1 ounce pear juice, 1 teaspoon dark karo syurp, and breastmilk or water. Didn't work. Ended up having to give her 1 teaspoon of milk of magnesia.

While neither are generally given to newborns, once in awhile for this type of thing is okay according to my doctor.

Also, it isn't uncommon for BF babies to go 1-2 weeks between poops, especially starting around 5 or 6 weeks. They start to absorb more of the breast milk so there is less waste. I learned a lot last week. lol

  • I EP, and as soon as I got my supply established and didn't have to supplement at all my baby started only pooping on Thursdays mornings and Monday afternoons. I wouldn't worry about the no pooping if your LO seems comfortable. They just use it all! The perfect food = no waste! :)

  • I wouldn't worry about it unless they're in pain or discomfort. Another trick to try is taking their temperature rectally - use a dab of petroleum jelly and only put it in a little bit. I gently wiggle it to the left and right before re-diapering, and DS usually poops in the next hour.

  • Is your LO in pain? Some Bf'd babies go days w/o pooping. I wouldn't worry unless your LO was in pain, cranky, etc. Also I wouldn't worry about giving a little bit of prune or pear juice. An oz or so won't hurt.

This is very helpful! Our LO hasn't pooped since Friday and I was starting to worry. I am not looking forward to when she finally blows.

Oh, and my LO is Abigail too :)

  • hope baby has success soon! as for the prune juice at 6 months rather than now...i think that's because it can sometimes leave kids a little gassy, so i don't think it would hurt but it could add to discomfort for a bit until it worked. but like you said, you'd maybe want to check with another doctor, at this point their bodies are still learning to digest

  • Wow, I had no idea that BF babies can poop that little! We do FF/BF Nd my man goes about once or twice a day. I wish he went less as we cloth diaper ...

A q-tip with vaseline works too if you are like me and still don't own a rectal thermometer. Of course, that trick didn't work for my DD anyway.
