In need of help/advice

To make a very long story short, H and I have decided to divorce. We've both known for a while now that it is just not working out anymore. However, I dont know how to even begin filing for divorce, or how to do anything really. I was told by my mother I would have to be separated from H for 1 year before I could file. Is this true?

I guess Im just a little too embarrased to contact anyone to ask about this :(

  • It varies by state.  CA, for instance, has a 6 month waiting period after you file.  You also can't finalize a divorce while a party is pregnant.  Do you mind sharing what state you live in?

I also suggest you at least talk with a lawyer.

  • Where I live you do not have to be seperated for a year. I just got through filing for a divorce almost a month ago. I know you can't be pregnant and file or at least not here you can't. Write down any questions you will have for your lawyer like custody things, child support, who will be responsible for medical insurance and bills or misc things like both of y'all pay half of day care bills or school tuition etc. I would think as far ahead into the future you can on things that you might want to split the costs of that way you don't have to ever go back and put them in the papers..
