C-sections

Bleeding - I overdid it :(

I'm such a moron.  Every time I've been told to "take it easy," whether it's when I'm sick or recovering from surgery, I never listen.  Such is the case with my c-section, which I had done on Thursday, April 26th.  The discharge instructions said little or no stair climbing, no lifting anything heavier than the baby, and as much rest as possible.  Well, I disregarded just about all of that.  My bleeding got heavy and then light off and on (which I know it's not supposed to do), and I've been seeing some clots when I got to the bathroom. All this time I thought this was lochia, aka normal post-delivery discharge. When the nurse set me straight yesterday, and mentioned that some of the blood was also coming from my severed ab muscles, I had a sudden and overpowering desire to straighten up and fly right when it comes to following the doctor's directions.   Since yesterday, when I parked my butt on the couch and dialed back my activity in all areas, I've had no bleeding at all.

Has anyone else goofed up like this and overdone it in the early days? If so, how did things turn out?  Was there any permanent damage?

  • No perm damage -- your body will be fine. But you need to RELAX! You are barely 2 weeks out from a MAJOR operation -- take it easy. You may have heavy bleeding for a few more days before it lessens a bit. I had clots off and on for almost 6-8 weeks so this is all very normal. I have also had 2 c-sections..

  • I just called my OB about this yesterday b/c my bleeding has kicked up a bit again.  She didn't really make it sound like being active and having more bleeding was an issue as far as c/s recovery goes.  She just said you're going to bleed more later in the day b/c you're more active, but not that you have to slow down.  You have to slow down if you are sore from being active, though.  She also said that the larger your uterus was, the more you will bleed.  So, with twins, I would expect more blood. Also, with subsequent PGs, your uterus is larger and you bleed more.  And, expect to bleed 6-8 weeks.

I overdid it around 5 days after my c/s.  I was pretty sore the next day and my bleeding got heavier but nothing serious happened.  Just take it easy, I highly doubt you have done any permanent damage.

yeah, what?  From your muscles and out where?  lol.. I'm confused.

I bled for a super long time (heavy bleeding) after my c-section.  I assumed it was normal.

Yeah - I was confused by that, too.  Especially how blood from my abs was somehow coming out the same place as blood from my uterus.  It creeped me out just the same, though. Although now I realize how silly it sounds. Maybe she meant something else or wasn't sure what she was saying.
