Just a small nurse vent!

Sorry so long!

So yesterday I woke up with severe pain in my lower abdomen and pelvic region.. I've been feeling the added pressure the past month but this was different, it was bringing tears to my eyes kind of constant pain. Thinking it was just the position little one was in I brushed it off and just rested for the day. Well it didn't get any better at all, in fact the pain got worse. So that night I called the triage nurse at my Drs office, she told me to take a bath, some tylenol, drink a glass of water and lay on my side for a couple hours and if it doesn't get better to go in to L&D and get checked. Well I ended up just falling asleep. I woke up with the same pain and it feeling worse this morning. The nurse called and checked up on me and she said it worried her that it was getting worse and to go in and get checked. So I did!

The nurse at L&D was kinda laughing it off the entire time. She hooked me up to all of the monitors and she checked me. I'm 37 weeks and 4 days. She asked me when the last time I was checked... I said Friday and I was 1.5 dilated. She laughed and said.. you're still there! You have only had one contraction since you've been here and it was not exciting at all.. You're not in labor. That's all she kept telling me was you're not in labor and you still have a loooong way to go. She really made me feel soo stupid for going in there. She kept telling me.. Pregnancy isn't supposed to feel comfortable and wonderful! I just wanted to cry. I never thought I was in labor first of all and the triage nurse was the one concerned and made me go get checked.

I know they probably get FTMs in there all of the time for silly reasons and it probably wastes their time.. But I'm sorry that's your job! This is my first pregnancy, I have no idea what is normal and what is not..

So basically her answer to my severe pain is.. pregnancy is uncomfortable and you're gonna have to deal with it since you have such a loooong way to go and she sent me home. Oy vey! So here I am 2 and a half weeks away from my due date. I'm still working and I'm in constant severe pain. Boy I hope my little guy decides he wants to make his grand entrance sooner rather than later!

  • :( i'm sorry.  Maybe it's time to stop working or take the rest of the week off if you can, or leave work a little early/come in late?  I'm still working too, but from home now because in the past week or so I've just got the worst aches and pains/bathroom issues/you name it!!

The nurse was stupid. Don't sweat it - it's GOOD you went in.  If you had waited and something was wrong, God fordbid, she would probably be the idiot to say "What were you waiting for!!!! Why didn't you come in sooner!!!!!"  Just ignore it, cry about it if you need to, and forget it.

I've noticed that when I'm getting bad pains/aches/pressure, the only way to feel better is really to rest and relax.  I understand entirely, it's not so much your unwillingness/complaining about the pain, it's the concern you feel when you know something different is going on with your body and you have no idea/control over what it is or could be.  We're almost there :)

The pains I can cope with - it's not knowing what pains are "normal" and what pains are "bad" that drive me crazy!

  • Wow, what an insensitive b****. I'm sure they do deal with FTMs all the time who come in when they don't need to. If you don't want to deal with that, get a different job. Geeze! You acted completely responsibly, and what's more, you were following the orders of your doctor's office! I would honesty report her if you have her name, and if you go in in labor and she's your nurse I'd ask to speak to the head nurse and request a different one (which is totally within your rights, btw. So sorry you had to deal with that :(

Just a thought on the pain - maybe see a chiropractor? I had severe lower back/tailbone pain in early pregnancy so have been seeing one throughout (I'd never seen one before, thought they were quacks) and it has made such a difference! It can't really hurt and maybe there is a twisted ligament or something that's holding your baby in a weird place and making the pain worse. Not saying it would be a magic cure-all, but I would NEVER have thought to go to a chiropractor unless someone suggested it, and it has made SUCH a difference for me, so I thought I'd at least put the idea out there.

::hugs:: and good luck to you!

  • It surprises me a nurse would tell you to go in to l&d in the first place, it sounds like very normal late pregnancy pain.  The fact you spent a day resting and sleeping would make you more stiff and sore. The l&d nurse could have been kinder and more reassuring but your drs nurse sounds like an alarmist to me.

EXACTLY!! That's soo how I feel!  I don't want to be one of those that drives my doctor crazy over every little concern, but if something were to be seriously wrong, I'd never be able to live with myself!

Thanks for letting me vent ladies! I know the last couple weeks seem to drag and every symptom gets worse but I know it will be soo worth it when I finally get to meet my little guy. Sometimes it just helps for me to just vent!!
