Dried Cranberries/Craisins

Has anybody given dried cranberries/craisins to their LO? DS really likes them (I cut them into halves or thirds), but I'm wondering if they're still a choaking hazard. I mentioned this to my sister, who said she's still afraid to feed them to her nearly 2 y.o. While I think this is a bit extreme, it got me thinking...

Re: Dried Cranberries/Craisins

  • I do, but they are mixed into pancakes or other breads.

  • I give DS raisins. Craisins are just pure sugar. Yes, raisins are have sugar as well, but craisins are just a hull filled with sugar.
  • not with all that added sugar
  • Nope. DD 1 will be 3 next month and she's never had a raisin or a craisin. Not only are they a choking hazar they are as bad as fruit snacks and other gummy things when it comes to sugars sticking to their teeth. I've been told they're a dentist's worst nightmare, as far as cavities go.

I asked if they were a choaking hazard, not about their sugar content. Thanks anyway.

Sheesh.  She was trying to be helpful.

I personally didn't think about all the added sugar and found the comment helpful.  I also wouldn't give them to DS at all because it's a choking hazard and I'd rather give him real fruit... what's the benefit of a crasin over real fruit?  I try to give DS fresh stuff... I make all my own purees, etc.  Why not just give the kid grapes cut in quarters instead?

This particular poster didn't say anything about craisins being a choking hazard, only that they contain a lot of sugar. I'm aware of that; it wasn't my question. DS eats plenty of real fruit. He's happily gnawing on an apple right now. I gave him a few craisins as they were the "healthy" snack at my older son's t-ball game and I wondered if choking is a concern with them. Anyway, it appears that it is so I won't give them to him again until he's older. (FWIW, I also know they can stick on teeth, but this is a non-issue b/c he doesn't have any.)

lol. I thought the same thing, and good for you for speaking up.  If you are cutting them, I don't think they are a hazard.

Anecdote...one time a friend of mine let her 15 month old go to town on a bag of Craisins.  I was there for the aftermath.  I think for that reason alone, I will avoid them!

Thanks! I can do without the preachiness of these boards. Next I'll get blasted b/c the cranberries weren't organic ;)

Actually, the only question that was asked was regarding giving your LO dried cranberries. Asked and Answered.  If you want complain about someone not answering a question that was asked then you should reread what you wrote and note the punctuation used.
