Induce or not?

Basically my doc gave me the decision.  I can choose to induce tomorrow night with cervadil and on Thursday start pitocin.  Or I can wait until next week and if no progress is made, do the same.  At 37 weeks I was 50%  and closed, 38 weeks 60% and and closed, and last week I was 60% and 1 1/2.  Today was 60% and 2.  Things are moving, just slowly.  I have tried every natural thing to do, except castor oil and I have been having contractions and cramping.  They think the baby is anywhere from 7-9 lbs and I am only 5'3 with a fused spine.  Any ideas?

Always a tough call, but...I would wait. Since you haven't passed your due date and you are making progress, giving you and baby a little more time should, if nothing else, make your body even more ready and induction-favorable. You could also go into labor on your own.

I'm unsure as to how a fused spine impacts things, but height has little to do with how you deliver -- it is more your pelvic opening. My MIL is 5'3 and delivered all four of her boys vaginally and they were all over 9 lbs. (DH was even over 10 lbs.) So 7-9 lbs is a big range and sounds very normal to me.

    Good luck with your decision!

ETA: I also have had an induction and it went very well. I was 5 days past my due date and when I went in and started getting monitored, the nurses said I was actually already in the early stages of labor and likely would have been in later that day on my own. I feel like that is one of the reasons it went so well.

  • If it were me I would wait until next week at the least.  I have been induced and it went well so I'm not totally against induction, however, I am more of the opinion that letting nature takes its course is best for both mom and baby.  Also, I think that with a fused spine you will have a better chance of avoiding a cs if you wait (which I've also had and am doing everything in my power to avoid this time around), because you are able to move around through your birth and utilize positions that will help open your pelvis.  If you are induced you will likely be tethered to the bed and unable to do this.  You are making progress so there is no reason to think you won't go into labor on your own within the next week.  That's just my two cents - best of luck in whatever you decide!

Given the choice, I would wait as well.  You're making progress and there's a good chance you could go on your own before then.  If I were you, I'd try to hold out.

Either way, good luck with your decision!

This. I see no reason to induce from what you described, and unless there's a reason I'd let your body and nature take its course!

  • I'd wait, I am not for inducing before or even on your due date.  Plus weights can be very different than the dr guess they told me ds would be 8lbs 10oz give or take a pond each way and he was 7lbs 3oz over a week later.

  • I'd wait if I were you...yesterday at my appt I was given the option to either induce tomorrow or induce next Wed..I chose next Wed! She told me the longer I wait the better chance of avoiding a longer labor and csection. My chances of a c would be very high if I was induced tomorrow...I am 2cm 50% but still that isn't enough to have an easy induction....I'm hoping my body will go into labor before next Wednesday...Good luck with your decision!

  • Height doesn't matter. Its a myth. It is the position of the baby, the position of the uterus and the shape of the pelvis that determine how the baby comes out. I am 5'3" and pushed out  a 9+ pound baby in less than 20 minutes on my last labor.
  • You haven't even gotten to your due date yet!  Why would you induce without a medical reason? You have been pregnant for 9 months, believe me, you won't be pregnant for much longer!  Just try to be patient. Inducing when your body isn't ready could cause you to have a very drawn-out, even more painful labor.
