have I lost my mind? WWYD

So I am having this baby eventually. Not quite sure when but its bound to happen. Anyway as soon as I have this baby I am set up to move 12 hours away. Well since my husband is in the army they will pay people to come in and pack us up and move are stuff there and we just drive there.

Well now im being told that if we do the move ourselves they will pay us up to 5 grand. Wow could our savings use that money. So now im debating on doing it ourselves. Most of our stuff is still packed from the last move, it would be mostly packing our clothes, DS1s toys and our kitchen.

So WWYD let them do it for you, or take a chance and pack up in advance and finish up with a newborn and 4 year old? My DH would be in charge of loading the truck I would just have to put stuff in boxes.  And also clean this house out. Do you think I would be taking on too much?

  • We did a DITY move because most of our stuff was already packed anyways. I would search on craigslist for movers - 2 guys and truck, college movers etc. You can usually find 2 people for $30-50/hr and it is sooo worth it. You could probably also find people to come and pack and clean. Even if you spend $500 - $1000 you are still money ahead.

I'm assuming that you are going to have to drive to your next duty station anyway, I would do it.

  • Do it yourself! Too much money to pass up! My husband and I moved two weekends ago...was it hard? Yes.. Just do a little at a time...it's going to be worth it!
  • Take the money and run! I agree with PP. You could find someone to do it for cheaper. At least the cleaning part if your DH can handle the packing. Plus if you have friends around who is not going to help a new mom when she asks for it?

  • I usually do Uhaul. Truck plus movers. My longest move was 600 miles, and it was under 500 for a 3br apt sized truck, car dolly, and movers.
  • But what do they mean by "pay up to 5 grande?" Does that mean they will cover the bills you incur through moving? Can it be significantly less than 5,000?
How much do you need the money? That might have an influence on what I would do.

I've moved A LOT and have always moved myself. One of my moves that it was just my hubby and I, we got the name of an hourly temp agency moving company. We paid for two guys for an hour and they helped with all the big stuff. It was so worth it. The service didn't cost too much but we did tip them generously knowing they just did some really tough work and the agency only pays them a small portion of what we paid. It is always helpful to have extra hands to help load/unload the truck.

  • I would do it ourselves too.  People aren't as careful packing up things when they're not their own anyway, IMO.  It's so worth it to use craigslist/uhaul/etc. as others have said!  It's going to be easier unpacking when you've put it away yourself, too.

  • Yes we've decided were doing it ourselves. Weve only lived her 6 months so most of our stuff is still packed. I was told they give you like a total of 9 grand and you usually have to spend 4 grand on the move. Even if they give us less and we come out with a few grand in the end it still seems worth it.

Our savings is nowhere near where I want it to be so as in needing the money no we would be fine, but I always feel better having extra for emergencies and what not.
