Success after IF

If you weaned to TTC again

How old was your LO?  Did you wean earlier than you might have if not for IF? Did your RE require a certain time period between weaning and cycling?

Originally I thought I would start to wean DD at 6 months when we introduced solids and slowly transition her to formula.  We would like to go back to the RE to cycle when DD is 11-12months old.  However, we will have to find a new RE and most likely repeat all testing before we can cycle.  I am so torn about weaning too early but dont want more than 2-3 yrs between babies.

I weaned DS at a little over 6 months...but I was ready at that point.  DS was not a good eater, and trying to get him to focus on eating was like a wrestling match.  I decided it was easier to chase him around with a bottle!  We weaned, 2 weeks later DH and I were OOT at a wedding, 2 weeks after that I got a BFP, and along came DD.  We had planned to go back to the RE about 2 months after I had weaned, because DOR runs in my family, and we had enough problems the first time without that diagnosis!

The second time, I ended up weaning DD as well at about 7 months, but again, I was ready.  Not to TTC again, but because I had either been pg or BFing for over 2.5 years and needed my body back!

  • I weaned DD at 14 months.  My ob/gyn wanted to re-run CD3 labs and told me they would be most accurate (and we could make the best plan for treatment) if I had them done at least six weeks after weaning.

FWIW, it took almost five months after weaning (three months of treatment) to get pregnant.  At that point DD was 18 months.  DD and LO#2 will be 27 months apart.

Yep I weaned at 7 months with my daughter when I wasn't really ready for it...but I really wanted to move forward trying for another baby!  My doctors only requirement was that I had full weaned before starting the cycle and meds.  It was a tough decision.

  • So far I have weaned back enough to get AF.  I'm down to 1 nursing session and 2 pumping sessions.  We meet with our RE this friday, but the nurse said they like 3 months to get the ball rolling for FET and that they won't do cd3 testing until after my 2nd post-partum AF.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I would talk to your RE about the need to wean in order to do testing or cycle, if you would prefer not to.  My RE told me I needed to, but I realized she had a lot of misinformation on breastfeeding and TTC in general (for example, she said my prolactin level would be "wayyyyy too elevated."  My bloodwork that day came back with a prolactin level of 3.5 (normal range is between 3 and 30).  After a lot of discussion she said she would allow us to try, and I became pg on our second natural IUI.

I'm not saying not to wean, just that if you would rather not, don't assume you have to. If you are doing medicated cycles it would of course depend on what meds you would need to do. Hopefully your RE is more knowledgeable than mine was!

  • I finally finished nursing DD at 12.5 months.  My initial goal was 12 months and I am SO happy I didn't stop earlier just to TTC.  My RE required 2 AF's after weaning. I was lucky I got the first one the week after I weaned.Postpartum, my cycles came back at 5 months and were for the most part regular (28-31 days).

The best advice I received for a veteran IFer was to stick with your initial goal with your LO is.  IF sucks and you don't know if or when you will be able to conceive again. So enjoy what you have now.

This LO is going to be our last I might BF longer...who knows!

  • I weaned in the middle of Feb when P was a year old. I had been having rehular cycles since P was 3 months old so my RE didn't think we would have much wait time before our FET. However, my CD3 labs are still abnormal. (The RE is unsure whether or not this is my new normal.) Anyway, we are still waiting to schedule our cycle three months later.

I have to find a new RE first. We are moving in June. Plus I doubt I could do a natural IUI like you did with my PCOS.

  • Our plan was to wean at 6 months to TTC again.  Both my RE and my OB told me to wean fast and race back but even then don't hold my breath (sucky ovaries and AMA).

6 months came and I just couldn't do it.  I sobbed on a regular basis.  I couldn't stop with one when the odds were so stacked against us to ever conceive another.   The whole "bird in the hand" concept, ya know?

DH was great about it and said let's set our sights on 9 months and revisit the issue then.

Then a few months later he started biting and the concept of weaning became much easier to bear.

My RE wanted 2-3 cycles post weaning before a medicated cycle - especially since I had ovarian issues.

I weaned, my libido came back with a vengance and we conceived Jace the very first ovulation post-weaning (the old fashioned way) despite being told it was all but impossible to conceive on our own.  My kids are 17 months apart.

My advice is to have a goal in mind but be kind to yourself.  If it's breaking your heart to even consider it when the time comes, push the goal out a bit and revisit it later.

    GL!!!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I called my RE to understand exactly what they would require before putting together a weaning plan.   They just wanted one full cycle post-weaning before they would let me cycle (i got AF 3 months PP).     We wanted a minimum of 18 months between kids so wanted to cycle when DD was 9-10 months old.

So I slowly weaned from the time DD was 6-8 months old.   Cycled when she was 9 months old.

    Good luck!

Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.

Little late replying to this, sorry. I weaned DS when he was 19 months.  So I guess I didn't wean super early but perhaps slightly earlier than I would have.  However at his age he didn't seem to miss it and I do not regret my decision.

My RE didn't require any time period before cycling.  I had my saline sono and other baseline work while I was still BF'ing.  I had gotten my PP period back by 9 months. They said I just had to have him weaned by the time I started my BCP.  And that's what I did ... I cherished my last feeding with him and then took my first BCP for this IVF cycle.

The most I've really heard RE making people wait is a month or so (I didn't read all other replies tho).  So I would probably wait until closer to the time you're planning on going back but that's just me.  I actually called my RE office and asked how long I'd have to wait so I had the answer before we even met for our consultation.
